Debunking Myths Around Coffee

Coffee, as a part of humanity, has come along with a plethora of questions, and in early attempts to answer them, we came up with some misconception, in turn resulting in myths when history perpetuated them. Putting away substances like alcohol and even cannabis, coffee is one of the most controversial substances we consume.

Common Myths and Misconceptions about Coffee
To bring some light into the subject and debunk some coffee-related myths, That Coffee Roasters decided to list some of the most common misconceptions around the beverage and explain the truth behind them.

Myth number 1: “Don’t drink coffee in the afternoon, it’ll give you insomnia.”
Caffeine is a stimulant chemical, this is a fact. But the caffeine in an average cup of coffee is quickly processed through the body, and most of this substance (an estimated 75%) is disposed of by the body in the following five hours, far away from nighttime.

Myth number 2: “Coffee can dehydrate you.”
Coffee is mostly water with natural additives. All of the H2O in a cup makes up for the dehydrating natural effects of caffeine, that are not strong enough for dehydrating a person when it’s diluted in water. Still, it shouldn’t be your drink of choice after a big game.

Myth number 3: “Got hangover? Drink coffee.”
Sure, it can reduce the grogginess the morning after a big party, and make you more alert as coffee often does. But it can’t cure the hangover.

Myth number 4: “Coffee can make you lose weight.”
Coffee has the property of enhancing the metabolism speed, but not for much and not for long, thus making it effective for dieting. Caffeine may reduce your desire to eat for a brief time, nonetheless.

Myth number 5: “Be careful, caffeine is highly addictive.”
This is only a half-truth myth because there could be some risks but the addiction is not as depicted on tv and media, coffee is not a gateway drug. Nonetheless, it stimulates the Central Nervous System; but the symptoms and withdrawal are nothing compared to real drugs.

Myth number 6: “Coffee will stunt your growth.”
This myth has been around forever, and it’s often said to children. However, the belief that coffee does stunt your growth is a lie. No scientific evidence supports this one.

Myth number 7: “Coffee causes heart diseases, cancer, etc.”
Yet again, no scientific evidence supports this myth. However, we always recommend avoiding excesses, even in coffee. If you suffer from high blood pressure, you might experience a temporary, yet not excessive, rise in your heart rate, but there is no scientifically proven link between caffeine and high cholesterol nor cardiovascular diseases.

Myth number 8: “Coffee is bad for pregnant women and their babies.”
Caffeine won’t directly harm a fetus. However, it’s advised that women should limit their daily caffeine intake to about one cup of standard coffee each day. Caffeine can reach the baby via the placenta, but no concrete studies are proving this to be harmful.

Myth number 9: “All coffee has the same amount of caffeine.”
Not all brews are the same, and some cups have a lot more caffeine than others. Not all coffee is created, grown or prepared equal, and this can definitely explain why some shops make coffee that gives you a little more buzz than others.

Did you believe in any of these myths? Or were you surprised by the truth? Don’t forget to leave your comments and questions on the section below, and follow us on out That Coffee Roasters social networks.

How Does Coffee Affect Our Mood During the Day?

Do you turn into a person only after drinking a cup of coffee? We explain you why!

The first time you drank coffee, you probably did it to find out what was all the fuss about it. Why do people love this bitter drink so much? You might not have noticed at first, but eventually, you realized that coffee was perfect to increase your energy during Monday mornings and it just made you feel so much better, even if you didn’t really know why.

Apart from water, coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world. Its positive effects are no secret, drinking a cup can improve our alertness and wake us up to have an overall better performance in our daily tasks. It’s no wonder then that caffeine had conquered the world in a way no other substances have entirely been able to.

But besides helping us shake away doziness, coffee also has a huge impact on our general mood during the day. Depending on how much coffee you consume every day, its effects can go from positive to negative. Caffeine can help you battle depression, but also it can increase the risk of suffering from anxiety disorders if you drink it too much. Stick with us to find out how our beloved lil’ cup affects our body chemistry and, therefore, our mood and emotions!

Adrenaline Goes Up!
Studies have found that caffeine starts working in our body 10 minutes right after consuming it. The first thing you’ll probably notice is that your heart rate will quicken and your blood pressure will rise. By this point, it’s hard to see any changes in our mood, but that’ll start to change after you hit the 20-minute mark.

As caffeine blocks your adenosine receptors to stop them from being able to receive the hormone, you will feel more aware and attentive, which means you’ll get better at making decisions and concentrating on small tasks. We’re basically saying that coffee will be artificially removing sleepiness' associated feelings or sensations from your brain.

But that’s not all there is to it: 30 minutes after the caffeine has entered your system, adrenaline will be released, and dopamine's levels will increase. If you’ve heard of dopamine before, you know that it’s widely known for producing a feeling of euphoria and happiness.

After 40 minutes, serotonin will join dopamine’s increasing levels, and your mood will lift! The combination of all these hormones will improve your motor neuron’s functionality and coordination, your body cells will be releasing energy faster, and you’ll be better at anything you do. How can you not be in a good mood if this is the case? You’ll be feeling caffeine’s powers in full effect!

Coffee will generally stay in your body for a total of 12 hours. After 6 hours, 50% of the caffeine will be gone thanks to its diuretic effect, and you will lose your little superpowers.

How Much Is Enough?
Even though we put it like this, we also have to warn you that caffeine can be addictive. Our bodies can start craving what makes them feel good but is not always the best. Caffeine increases our adrenaline's and norepinephrine's levels, which put our minds and bodies in a state of alert and emergency. This effect can make us feel stressed and anxious in otherwise normal situations, and cause us to feel irritability and agitation.

Don’t worry though. This generally does not happen unless you’re consuming way too much caffeine. If you start to feel these symptoms and begin to experience muscle tremors, then it’s definitely time to reduce the dose. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends consuming no more than 400 milligrams a day, which amounts to 4 or 5 cups of coffee.

That’s more than enough to get all benefits coffee can bring into your life and to enjoy from its bittersweet and contrasting flavor. And it just happens that we have exactly what you need in That Coffee Roasters! Visit our web page and discover the wonders of our coffee and follow us on our social media to stay updated with our new content.

From the moment coffee enters our body, it starts changing our mood.

The Perfect Soundtrack for Coffee Lovers

Coffee has always been a perfect companion for many artists and musicians.

Rainy afternoons, energetic mornings, happy moments or sad weekends... It doesn’t really matter what kind of day it is, a warm cup of coffee is often the best companion to fit your mood and make you feel better. Just like music, this lovely beverage has inspired and boosted many artists around the world who have dedicated great songs and lyrics to it. That’s why we’ve put together a perfect playlist to listen to while enjoying what you love the most!

Whether you drink your coffee to wake you up in the mornings, to watch the rain falling in the coziness of your living room or as a perfect excuse to finally catch up with friends and family, we have a song and a cup of coffee for every moment. In this selection, you’ll find songs that were inspired by coffee and others that just fit perfectly that coffee mood we know so well. So without further ado, turn up the volume and enjoy!

We just couldn’t help including this soul classic released by the great Otis Redding in 1966. It will fill you with that odd sense of nostalgia for past times, and it might just be the perfect tune if you’re in a “sittin’ and talkin’ with your baby over cigarettes and coffee” mood.

The Boston-based singer and songwriter gifted us with this fun, but not very well-known, tune as part of her 1985 debut album: Step Into the Light. If you love your mornings with a bit of folk rock and a lot of caffeine, we guarantee you will love it! You’ll be full of energy and good vibes to start your day.

Nothing says Sunday morning like Sunrise, by Norah Jones. The successful American singer seriously knows how to keep us in bed all weekend with her soft voice and peaceful melodies. Jones gives us a perfect song for enjoying a simple latte while letting sunshine filter through the window panes.

Even if we didn’t want to include this amazing song in the list, it’d basically be a crime to leave it out! Let yourself be taken away to a classic and busy café, full of nostalgia and good times, as Sinatra timelessly sings about how much coffee grows in Brazilian fields.

Just like our coffee, we love to get exotic and unique! Give a listen to this flirty and fun song by the French duo Felipecha. Its title translates to “Coffee Morning.” If you end up dancing along with your partner while enjoying a cappuccino on a Saturday morning, well, that’s just a plus!

We could never forget our Latino roots! This classic, by Juan Luis Guerra, is absolutely beautiful and we guarantee you’ll love it. In this piece, the Dominican composer sings out his hopes that coffee will rain over the countryside and improve its people’s fortune. Now, for this particular playlist, we’re thinking about the song’s acoustic live version, which you can find in Juan Luis Guerra’s Youtube channel. The perfect tune to end the afternoon!

If you prefer to use your coffee break as a moment to be on your own with your thoughts and do some thinking, then Left Alone, by Fiona Apple, is your perfect choice. Its quirky beat and clever lyrics will have you tapping to the rhythm. Piano notes will feel like raindrops falling on your city's streets.

Maybe you’re a hopeless romantic, sweet vanilla latte lover, but you’re definitely not alone. Dedicate this song to that special one who makes you feel all warm-and-fuzzy inside and ask them out to bond over some espresso!

Kids from the 80’s and the 90’s, raise your hands if you too went through an Alanis Morissette phase! We want to bring this one back for the ones who love a passionate and intellectually fueled conversation around a cappuccino. Get inspired by this piece that Morissette dedicated to her twin brother in her MTV Unplugged performance, back in 1999.

Do you like to sip some black coffee before hitting the road? This piece is full of the best blues and rock ever made to fit that mood. And if you’re one of those who knows that coffee beats tea anytime, English vocalist Steve Marriott completely agrees with you, so don’t let his origins fool you!

11. The Heart of Life by John Mayer

Do you need a coffee's boost to make you feel better and get you out of that gloomy mood? Then maybe you should drink it with this song, but we do warn you: it might get you emotional in noo time. You don’t have to worry, Mayer’s performance will remind you that things are always okay in the end and that fear is just a friend that’s misunderstood.

That’s the end of our selection! Did we leave one out? Is there a special song that always gets you in that coffee cup kind of mood? Let us know in the comments what you think about this song list and which others would you add. After all, what better way to fill yourself with positive energy than enjoying those things you love? That’s exactly what we do every day, here, in That Coffee Roasters!

Are you in the mood for a cup of coffee? Listen to these songs while at it!
