DIY: 5 Crazy Uses for Coffee Grounds You Can Try In Your Everyday Life

diy coffee grounds
If you're obsessed with coffee, learn how to include in your everyday activities!

How do people invent new uses for things? Coffee was first consumed as a fruit, then as a beverage. We thought there were no other uses for it. But we were mistaken. Along the way, it seems like there were people bored enough (or smart enough) to start using coffee grounds in some really unusual ways... and it worked splendidly for them! For those little experiments, we’re now thankful.

Because if you love coffee, then you’ll probably want to take the most out of your daily cup into other activities in your life. Here are a few ways to do it yourself at home!

Flea repellent for dogs
We have no idea who came up with this, but it seems like someone found out that fleas don’t like coffee. Good for them! However, you need to be careful if you’re going to try this because dogs can’t consume coffee. It’s toxic to them, so don’t let them lick it. While bathing your dog and after applying shampoo, rub coffee grounds thoroughly all over its body and coat. Then, rinse off and let your dog dry as usual. It will help to keep the fleas away!

Coffee paste for dark circles and bags
If you get into the science of dark circles and bags, you’ll know that they’re there because your blood vessels are swollen. So can coffee help you get rid of them? According to this blogger, it can. Because coffee is diuretic, it helps “draw water away from puffy cells.” Brew your coffee like you always do, then mix the grounds with water and rub them softly all around your eye area (don’t let it get inside your eyes, of course). Let it sit for 15-20 minutes and clean thoroughly. Let us know if it worked!

Make aromatic candles
If you can’t smell the sweet aroma of coffee can you tell if is it morning yet? We don’t think so. Make this incredible candles and take coffee's aromas out of your cup and into your entire house! You can try this great recipe for which you’ll only need old candles and coffee grounds. Check it out here!

Shiny hair and beautiful skin with coffee
Coffee is really good for your hair and skin. You can make your own coffee scrub and use it for exfoliation, make your own soaps or just rub it all over your hair. The final result will be a shiny, invigorated hair and clear skin! Coffee is also great for hair growth. Is there anything our beloved beans can’t do? We think not! Always remember to use cold coffee grounds and let them sit in your hair for about half an hour. Find some great recipes for coffee scrubs and soaps right here and here.

Garbage disposal cleaners

Coffee is perfect to keep bad odors away. You can use your coffee grounds to clean  your sink and make it smell great. Look at the recipe right here, it’s fairly simple and you probably already have all ingredients at home. Coffee is also great to scrub off grime out of your stove or pans. Just mix it with your cleaner and give it a go!

If you know how to use it, coffee can make your life easier! It’ll wake you up in the mornings, it’ll relax you in the afternoon, and it’ll make a perfect ally for cleaning, gardening, taking care of your skin, and so much more! Why You Should Add Coffee to Your Thanksgiving Celebration

Coffee's unique aroma is perfect to make your Thanksgiving warm and special!

The air is crisp, leaves are falling, and colors are changing. Flavors are getting sweeter and family dinners bigger. We’re getting close to Christmas, and nothing calls for coffee's earthy and warm aromas like the end of a Thanksgiving dinner. A good dose of caffeine is always bound to make us feel better and replenish our energies. It’s the perfect companion for a round of childhood tales and old memories recounted around a dinner table or hearth.

Before your Thanksgiving celebration, think about coffee. When you’re shopping for the last ingredients, remember it has the potential to give that final magic touch to your dinner. You can gift your hosts a bag of coffee, or you can use it to accompany desserts. It’s also a great option for guests who don’t drink alcohol and goes incredibly well with pumpkin's and cinnamon's flavors. Just as wine, coffee has different attributes that change its properties and make it taste different. It’s an excellent ingredient for many meals as well!

For example, if you’re serving a pumpkin pie for dessert, a medium-roasted coffee with a delicate body is its perfect companion. You could even start drinking it from morning to the end of the day. If by any chance, you prefer a chocolate dessert, a dark-roasted coffee's sweetness and full body is the way to go! It tastes amazing with chocolate and will leave your guests asking for more.

If you decide to go with an apple pie or another fruity dessert, lighter coffee roasts are your perfect allies. Their brightness and citrus flavors will enhance any of these dishes’ fruity qualities. You’ll enjoy this combination like no other! It’s a matter of knowing how to mix your cup of joe to seize all benefits it can bring to your Thanksgiving dinner.

You can also take it further and prepare a delicious coffee milkshake. It’s easy to make at home, and it’ll make dessert time even more special. All you’ll need is:

  • 1/2 cup brewed coffee
  • Chocolate sauce (to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon marshmallow cream
  • 4 cups vanilla ice cream
  • Crushed Graham crackers for topping
  • Chocolate drops for garnish.
To prepare it, follow these instructions:
  1. Brew the coffee.
  2. Grab two glasses and spread the chocolate sauce all along their interior sides in a vertical pattern. The glass should look as if it's striped with chocolate.
  3. Spread marshmallow cream around the lip of each glass.
  4. In a blender or food processor, combine the coffee and ice cream until they are well mixed.
  5. Pour the mixture into the glasses and top them with crushed Graham crackers.
  6. Garnish them with a chocolate drop and serve.

Just remember not to brew your coffee ahead of time as it tends to become bitter over time. Besides, if you let it sit for too long, its flavor won’t be as strong. Start preparing it right after dinner. It can be done while you clear the table and serve dessert! Have different additions at hand, so everyone can have their coffee as they like. Milk creamers or sweeteners are a must to make this Thanksgiving as cozy as you can! Search for your favorite coffees on That Coffee Roasters’ online shop and let us join you in this and the many celebrations to come!

How To Make Espresso at Home Without an Espresso Machine

You don't need the fanciest machine to have a shot of espresso.

Going to the nearest coffee shop and asking for their favorite espresso drink, whether it’s a cappuccino, latte or anything else, is many people’s most awaited part of the day. But what happens when you go home and start craving that sweet and warm flavor? Nothing can compare to the espresso’s aromas and flavors. We have to give that to the Italians. So wouldn’t it be great if you could have one in the comfort of your living room?

Sure, you could always buy an espresso machine, but that might be a little too much for you, as they can be a bit expensive and therefore not immediately available to satisfy your cravings. Don’t worry! Not all is lost. There are ways to brew an espresso, one that can almost perfectly imitate the one from your favorite cafe, right in your kitchen!

First, we have to understand how espresso is made. Both coffee and the process used to brew an espresso are unique on their own. To give your drink that strong and potent flavor, you’ll need a dark-roasted coffee. A finely ground coffee helps to increase the pressure required to push the water through the filter and create a good shot of espresso.

And that’s exactly the key to a good espresso drink. Espresso machines use boiling water and push it through the coffee with a lot of pressure. That’s what you’ll be hoping to imitate when you’re working on your homemade cup. Depending on what kind of coffee machine you own, an Aeropress, a Moka pot, or a french press, you’ll find the right method to do it just fine.

French press
As it’s more likely that you own a French press instead of any of the other two machines, we’ll beginning with a recipe for it. If you do it right, it’ll definitely give you a high-concentrated coffee. You’ll need:

  • French press
  • Ground coffee
  • Tablespoon or scale
  • Kettle
Grind the beans finely, measuring out about 2 tablespoons (preferably more). You’ll want a hefty mound of coffee in your French press to add some richness to the brew since it won’t come out as frothy as with a Moka pot or an Aeropress. Boil water and remove it from the stove for 30 seconds. Add the coffee to your French press and then add a few splashes of hot water to it. This will allow the coffee to bloom and release its oils. Let it sit for 30 seconds. Pour the rest of the water in and stir the coffee to make sure all coffee grounds absorbed it right. Close the lid and let it steep for approximately 2 minutes and 30 seconds. The stronger you want it, the longer you should leave it. Afterwards, simply press the plunger on your machine, slowly but steadily. Plunge it halfway and then raise the plunger before plunging all the way down. Enjoy!

Moka pot
However, due to to the water pressure it generates, the best way to prepare an espresso without a machine is to do it with a Moka pot. Here’s what you’ll need:
  • Moka pot
  • Ground coffee
  • Tablespoon or scale
Measure out 1 ½ tablespoons of coffee, or measure out on a scale to about 21 or 22 grams. Grind your coffee beans as finely as possible. Moka pots work best with a fine ground coffee. Pour 3 ½ fluid ounces of water into the bottom of the pot. Inside it will also be a built-in filter, where you’ll place coffee. Heat to about 200 degrees. When water begins to heat to a point where coffee would naturally sinks, and sugar would dissolve, stir and lower the heat. You’ll want this mixture to simmer without ever coming to a boil slowly.
The rest of this process is a lot like listening and waiting for a tea kettle to whistle. Wait until coffee begins to expand and foam to the upper level of the pot. The hot water will create the pressure needed here to produce a strong coffee, as well as a bit of foam. When the top is filled with coffee, stir and pour it into a cup. And that’s it! You’ve made your own espresso!

Aeropress
Finally, if you happen to have it, an Aeropress could also do the job and create a good espresso imitation. It's easy to make single and double shots using it, and one of the best things is that it can make other types of coffee just as well as it brews espresso. It's also a portable device, making it an ideal solution if you want to make espresso while traveling or camping. This time, you’ll need:
  • Aeropress
  • Coffee grounds
  • Tablespoon or scale
  • Grinder
Stack your Aeropress. Place one or more filters inside the drain cap, lightly rinse, and then put it inside the press' compartment that will rest atop your coffee cup. Prepare about 2 tablespoons of coffee by grinding coffee beans the most finely you can. Drop them into the filter. Add approximately 3 ½ fluid ounces of water, heated to about 200 degrees. Stir along with the coffee. Then, press down the plunger – hard. Remember, pressure creates espressos! Pour your espresso into your favorite coffee mug, and enjoy!
There you have it! It’s not an impossible task so you can start experimenting making espressos at home. At That Coffee Roasters, we know that creativity and passion fuel the best of the art of coffee making, so never stop trying and having fun while you’re at it!
