What Can I Do with My Leftover Coffee?

Sometimes we make much more coffee than we intended. Or maybe things came up, and we left our brew unattended and left to get cold. This doesn’t mean coffee is gone to waste, reusing it is always the best alternative. Once you know what to do with your extra brewed coffee, a little too much coffee can become a delicious or useful blessing.

That Coffee Roasters suggests measuring your coffee with care before brewing it if you don’t want to have an extra and cold coffee. But in the case it happens, we offer you some alternatives for it. There’s no excuse for waste.

Some alternatives for making the most out of the leftover coffee
There are plenty of recipes that need coffee in their preparation, leftover coffee is a great way to use it for your desserts or even some meals. Let’s review some.

In past articles, we’ve explored some traditional recipes that call for coffee like tiramisu or coffee soaked ladyfingers layered with whipped custard and cocoa powder, but a dash of creativity can take you to new culinary levels.

Cooking with the leftover coffee: think about it, extra coffee is essentially coffee-flavored water. You can use leftover coffee in your steak marinade, for example. If you make a fruit compote, try using your brew instead of water for the perfect breakfast topping. If you really want to be efficient and have a 2-in-1 breakfast, you could even cook your morning oatmeal in coffee instead of regular water, you put your own limits!

The leftover coffee can also add an extra touch of acidity to most recipes. Experiment with vinaigrettes by changing the vinegar for coffee. Create your own caffeinated barbeque sauce or chili.

Using coffee as a water substitute for baking: similar to cooking, just change water for coffee in a baking recipe. This might work for a cake or brownie mix for a rich and delicious treat.

Coffee doesn’t go bad immediately, you can put your coffee in the fridge and save it for baking later. Just don’t let it sit longer than a couple days, you don’t want to bite into a cake and discover old coffee flavor.

Making coffee ice cubes and smoothies: iced coffee can get messy and watered down before you can drink it all. Coffee ice cubes can improve that. Just add your leftover coffee into an ice cube tray and let it freeze overnight. That way your iced coffee stays cold and undiluted for a longer time.

Now, take coffee ice cubes to the next level by making a coffee smoothie. Sounds great, huh? And it's so simple! You just have to blend coffee ice cubes, some fruit like bananas, and a cup of milk (or even yogurt) together to get a cool caffeinated drink. You can also change the bananas for cocoa powder, cinnamon, or vanilla for a flavor boost.

Remember: the key is to be creative, avoid waste and, above all, enjoy the results! Please let us know your opinions on the corresponding section and don’t forget to follow us at our That Coffee Roasters social networks!

Reusing coffee grounds

Reusing coffee grounds
The benefits of coffee can also be enjoyed by plants.

This world’s resources are not infinite, and knowing this, some people decide to take certain measures to save and extend the use of some things that most people discard after fulfilling their purpose. It’s unusual, but not completely uncommon to see someone reusing the coffee grounds, even more than twice, which can result into intrigue to disgust in people who aren’t used to this habit, generating debates that we have been carrying on for years. In this article we will talk about the coffee grounds, and whether it is reusable or not, as well as denying some myths that revolve around this particular custom.

Is it dangerous if you do it?

Not really, there isn’t any study that says that second-brewed coffee is bad for your health. This applies if you immediately (or in the short-term) decide to reuse it.

If you care much for the original flavor and that rich, strong taste of fresh coffee in your mouth, you’ll probably get disappointed when reused coffee grounds. It’s not that it's unhealthy, it’s just not recommended.

It could be dangerous if you let the coffee grounds alone and exposed, damp grounds can be a potential petri dish of bacteria and fungus, thus endangering your health. If you really want to reuse the coffee grounds, let them dry for about three days (use the sunlight for this), and avoid exposing them to humidity.

Tip: some people use second-brewed coffee as a base for their protein powders.

How else can I reuse my coffee grounds?

This has been the million dollar question for years, fortunately, many people have experimented over and over and have landed in many useful ways we all can reuse the coffee grounds. Whether it is because they don’t like to waste, or because they’re just trying to be eco-friendly, there is more than a reason to give those coffee grounds a second chance. Here is a list of ways you can reuse your coffee grounds.

  1. Refrigerator deodorizer: fill a cheesecloth with dry coffee grounds, and place the bag on a shelf in your refrigerator. The coffee grounds absorb strong odors
  2. Face and body scrub: the abrasiveness of the grounds helps to remove dead skin cells, without irritating your face or body. To use them, rub the coffee grounds on in the shower, then wash them off with cool water
  3. Hair shine: running coffee grounds through your hair can give it a nice sheen. Just rub the coffee grounds in as part of a final rinse, and wash them out with cold water
  4. Shoe deodorizer: sprinkle dry coffee grounds into your shoes, let them sit overnight, and then shake the grounds out over a trash can. The grounds soak up any odors, leaving your shoes smelling cleaner
  5. Natural abrasive: sprinkle old coffee grounds onto an old cleaning cloth and use them to scrub away stuck-on food from counters or dishes. While used grounds are abrasive, they aren’t so harsh to damage the surfaces in your kitchen
  6. Beautiful golden dye: turn that pesky coffee stain around and use it to your advantage.  Re-wet old coffee grounds and use it to dye everything from feathers and cloth to Easter eggs. Used coffee grounds soaked in a bit of water can also be used to turn boring white paper into ‘antique’ parchment
  7. Rejuvenating facial: just as it works as a body scrub, coffee makes an excellent facial.  Mix two tablespoons of used coffee grounds with an equal amount of organic cocoa powder. Add three tablespoons of whole milk or heavy cream and top it off with a heaping tablespoon of honey for the perfect all-natural alpha-hydroxy and antioxidant facial
  8. Cellulite treatment: use a scrub made with coffee grounds and warm water for ten minutes twice per week on any areas affected by cellulite. Results should start to become apparent within four weeks of steady treatment
  9. Washing hands: always keep a generous amount of coffee grounds next to the sink. Use the grounds to help remove the smell of your hands when you’re cooking or after washing dishes. Particularly good for removing garlic, onions and fish odors
  10. Unclog drains: pour your used coffee grounds with a little dish soap and (important) hot water. This will help clean your drain and remove grease residues

Drink Coffee in Coffee with These Reusable Cups!

We can help the environment in many ways!

One of the best things about being part of this generation is that we’re always looking for environmentally friendly ways to do our daily activities. Now more than ever, we’re aware of the impact that our actions have on the environment and on our planet. Saving and protecting our resources is key to develop sustainable production, especially when we talk about the coffee industry. That’s why today we want to share with you a project made out of our favorite drink: coffee!

Kaffeeform is the name their creators gave to the material with which they create coffee cups and other different utensils. It’s the result of asking one simple question: what happens to coffee grounds after we have enjoyed our espresso, cappuccino or Americano? Is there no way to re-use this good and natural resource? They discovered that there was actually a pretty cool way to use it and Kaffeeform was, in consequence, born.

After three years of experimenting, a lot of research and hard work, Julian Lechner, the product designer behind the project, came up with the material that now allows him to recycle old coffee grounds that would otherwise be simply discarded and use them to create completely new products.

According to Sprudge:

40% of the material compound is made from the used coffee grounds they collect from local coffee shops; five to six kilograms every day. The coffee grounds need to be dried before starting the material production, otherwise the grounds would get moldy. The production runs in a small factory building where all the fibers, wood grains, and biopolymers are added in the right combination. Under heat, the matter is then transferred into molds that form cups and saucers, even retaining a nice smell of coffee.

In these little cups, the material speaks louder than the design. You can immediately see that there’s something unique about them. All Kaffeeform cups have the appearance of dark marblewood, smells of coffee, are very light, and finally are dishwasher friendly and long-lasting, as they can be used over and over again.

One cup and saucer can be made from the waste of six consumed cups of espresso, which according to Kaffeeform, are collected in local coffee shops in Berlin. Since it was launched in 2015, Kaffeeform has grown, and they now offer different cup sizes for espresso shots or cappuccinos. Among their key features we find:

- Dishwasher friendly.
- Lightweight.
- Durable.
- High isolation qualities.
- Slight coffee scent.
- Food safe.
- Free of BPA.
- Eco-friendly material composite.
- Made for unlimited consumption.
- Each cup looks unique.
- Carbon neutral disposal / Biodegradable.

If you want to find out more about this project, visit Kaffeeform’s website. Who knows? Maybe one day we’ll all adopt these types of cups. Maybe the coffee you drink today will become the cup for the coffee of tomorrow…

Coffee Industry Trends for 2018

Experts expect the coffee industry to keep growing.

As January hits us with its chilly weather, here at That Coffee Roasters, we are doing everything we can to keep our cups of coffee warm and cozy. Let temperatures drop and join us instead at exploring what this 2018 might bring for the coffee industry. What trends will we see? What changes are coming to the market? We might get some clues about it thanks to the coffee festivals that were celebrated last year.

We’re specifically speaking about World of Coffee 2017, which was celebrated in Budapest last year. At the coffee-specialty website The Perfect Daily Grind, they interviewed owners, roasters, manufacturers, competitors and coffee associations to find out more about where they believe our beloved drink is headed this 2018. Here’s what we can learn from what they had to say.

Coffee industry will keep on growing
Even though the last few years, we’ve seen how successful third wave coffee has become, experts were expecting the trend to slow down and the market’s growth to eventually flatten. However, that never happened. More and more consumers are getting into the world of specialty coffee and this allows the industry to keep on growing and specializing itself. Micro-roasteries, and cafes will continue to open in diverse places. Soon enough, Middle Eastern and Eastern Europe countries will be joining the wagon in full force.

Diversified coffee shop offerings
It seems like our beloved coffee shops’ menus will be expanding on this 2018. Some experts predict an increase in coffee shop diversification that will go beyond their regular desserts. Products like beer, wine and cheese are proving to be an interesting alternative to accompany our favorite coffee. This can result in the possibility of reaching new and wider audiences, which means a new opportunity for commercial growth.

New year, new preferences, new coffee
As coffee starts to reach new audiences, baristas will start getting more creative in what they offer. Cold brews, for example, are getting increasingly popular, especially among people who are not regular coffee drinkers. Since cold brew is sweeter in taste and allows a wide variety of recipes, it’s perfect for non-coffee-lovers demographics. Younger drinkers will be especially attracted by the new combinations we might taste this year.

We’ll probably be seeing a greater demand on sweet coffees over acidic ones. Sweet notes are the new trend and we’ll have to see if the industry is up to meet the market’s new demands.

Producers are getting the hang on alternative processing methods
Producing countries are expanding their array of processing methods like never before. Some of these include raised beds, honey processing, natural processing and lactic fermentation. Embracing diversity means that we might see a larger variety and options in the market. Buyers and consumers are asking for it, so farmers are providing it! However, many of these new processing trends are expensive and they might leave poorer farmers behind, as producers with resources will exploit them.

Brewers are focusing on water
Although technology is also taking center-stage with new and more precise machinery that expands options for baristas, coffee professionals are also inspecting the benefits and uses that water can add to the brew. Water components can have a very strong effect on our coffee’s taste, more than people would expect. Aspects like temperature and purity matter on all beverages. Water can affect performance, and the lifespan of coffee makers as well. It even seems that products like “third-wave water” are making their way into the community, so expect to hear more from it.

What would you like the coffee industry to put an eye on this 2018? What else would you like to see in your favorite cafés and roasters? Tell us all about it on our social media and stay updated to see where is coffee taking us for the next 12 months!

How to Reutilize Your Leftover Brewed Coffee

Coffee can be reused with other recipes, making you have a different experience with it.

Looking back, you might have noticed just how much coffee you have thrown to the trash can. After brewing coffee, there seems to be no further use of these grounds. But you would be surprised to know there is, and a plenty lot of things.

Coffee is much more than your morning booster, and after reading this, you’ll be surprised with the many uses leftover brewed coffee has. So before washing your coffee down the drain, read the following options:

Alternatives for leftover coffee
1.- Compost
Coffee grounds make for excellent compost. Used leftover grounds are highly rich in nitrogen, which makes it a great fertilizer for plants. If you’re going to use leftover coffee in your garden, make sure that it was brewed and composted first.
2.- Exfoliate your skin
Skin care and coffee also match. Leftover grounds are a great alternative for your skin. You can mix it equal parts of olive or coconut oil and massage your skin with it. Who needs expensive exfoliating products when you have coffee?
3.- Make your refrigerator smell fresh
Coffee grounds are a great deodorizer alternative for your refrigerator. All you need to do is place a bowl of them inside, and it’ll do the job.
4.- Do the dishes!
Take advantage of the texture of the grounds to wash your dishes. Coffee grounds are excellent as an abrasive, which turns them into the ultimate household tool.
With all these options, there are several things you can do with that coffee. So next time you brew, you won’t have to put it to waste and reutilize it, instead. Is there anything you cannot do with coffee? Other than feeling energized, you can get stuff done in many other aspects.

Coffee is more than just a drink, as you can see. But you would not have just any coffee, right? Do not worry, That Coffee Roasters can solve that. Their products are suited for specialty consumers like you. Contact them and drink coffee like you deserve to.
When you have leftover coffee, you can get extremely creative with it.
