Coffee Etiquette: Manners at Coffee Time

Even coffee has its ground rules, which make the drinking a more enjoyable experience.

Coffee culture has gone mainstream, that’s a fact. If you live in or around any major U.S. city, chances are you've been to a couple (or more than) local coffee shop These artisanal shops can coexist in harmony even if they’re right next to a fancy Starbucks, there’s a coffee shop for every style of customer.

Manners, nonetheless, are universal, even if they seem to change from region to region, there are many global ways of being polite, the very existence of the words ‘’good morning’’ and ‘’thank you’’ are a proof of this.

Classic Etiquette for drinking coffee

Politeness know no timeline, and today, we’d like to list some practices that any educated coffee lover should apply.

  1. Don't leave your spoon in the coffee cup/mug while holding it or drinking; place it on the saucer or a plate instead.
  2. Don't use ice to cool a hot drink, it is an offense to the one that made your brew.
  3. Don't dunk doughnuts, biscuits, or anything else in your coffee unless you're at a casual place where dunking is the norm (such as certain shops).
  4. Don't extend your pinky finger when drinking from a cup, this in an obsolete fashionthat died with the Victorians.
  5. After used, Crumple the cream or sugar empty packages and place them on the edge of your saucer or butter plate.

Social Norms That can be applied at any Coffee Shop

Manners are not a thing of the past, all the contrary, they adapt into social norms and expressions of politeness that we could all use to make the coffee experience a nicer, better one. These are some showings of politeness and social manners that you can apply whenever you decide to have a cup of coffee.

  1. Be polite when ordering, the Barista is not a robot, say ‘’hello’’ and thank you when ordering.
  2. Do not use your cellphone when ordering, take that call later or make that Instagram Post after you have your coffee.
  3. If by the time you’re in front of the line you still don’t know what to order nor have your paying method ready, then please, let other people order, some of them might be in a hurry or just want to order a simple espresso and be good to go.
  4. Be patient if you ordered more than two brews, specially if they are different kinds.
  5. Don’t leave unexpected messes such as spills after you’re done at the table, passing a napkin over the spill will do you no harm.
  6. Don’t sit on a big table if you’re on your own, and if you ever do, then let people sit on the same table (they have to ask you first, of course, but should be considered as well)
  7. Don’t abuse the local wifi, sure, it’s there for a reason, but at least justify it ordering something worth the time you’ll spend on the computer.
  8. If you pop up your laptop at the coffee shop, it’s okay to hear music if you’d like, but be considered with other customers and bring a long a set of headphones.
  9. If you have to take a call, don’t be loud, people don’t need to overhear unwanted chattering.
  10. Be respectful to the barista, don’t throw away some coffee on the trash bin for adding milk when you can just say to him/her ‘’please, leave room for cream’’ when ordering.
  11. Don’t get mad or make a fuzz if they don’t get your name right on the cup, coffee shops can get loud when crowded, most names have many variants and most important, the coffee will taste all the same, so what’s the harm?
  12. If you use the coffee shop as a workspace and decide to bring some food, make sure it’s something the shop doesn’t actually sell, you can bring a snack if they don’t sell any, but buy something to go with it.

As you have seen, dear readers, these simple manners can make a huge impact on the barista’s and the other customers day, turning a simple idle time at the coffee shop or a work meeting at a local Starbucks a more enjoyable and civilized experience for all of us, If you have any comments or want to add another social norm, please do so on the comment section below, and don’t hesitate in subscribing on our That Coffee Roasters Networks.

Only on informal occasions, it is acceptable to dunk food into coffee in public. Otherwise, it's seen as tasteless.

Coffee Grind Facts

Coffee grind facts
It all depends on the type of coffee you prefer and the brewing method used to make it!

We can all agree that coffee is delicious. In fact, it’s one of the most popular drinks in the world (the United States itself imports more than $4 billion worth of coffee each year), but just as to make an omelet you gotta break a couple eggs, for a good cup of coffee a good grind is indispensable.

You may be wondering why and how is coffee ground before being brewed. The basic goal of making coffee is to get what’s sealed inside the bean, out of it. We are talking about Caffeine, natural oils, and other chemicals that make it so delicious and rich in taste. By grinding the coffee beans, you help the water to extract efficiently the solubles that are responsible for coffee’s taste and aroma.

There are different types of coffee grinds, all of them with different purposes and varying methods of brewing, but they have something in common: they are rich in flavor, texture, and energy. They are sorted based on how much the coffee beans are ground before being brew.

  • Extra-Coarse Coffee Grind: is used for cold brewing methods (like the Toddy Brewer)
  • Coarse Coffee Grind: it’s commonly used for French Press coffee
  • Medium-Coarse Coffee Grind: used in specialty devices like the Cafe Solo and Chemex Brewer
  • Medium Coffee Grind: is used in Drip brewing methods
  • Medium-Fine Coffee Grind: one of the most sold coffee grounds, used for pour-over cones, vacuum pots, and siphon brewers
  • Fine Coffee Grind: traditionally used for espresso
  • Extra-Fine Coffee Grind: used for Turkish coffee (therefore it’s often named Turkish grind)

Coffee Grind Trivia

Here are some little-known facts about Coffee Grind and its history.

  • There are two kinds of coffee grinders: Blade Grinders (which chop the coffee beans much like a blender), and Burr Grinders (that crush the coffee beans between a moving wheel and fixed surface)
  • The correct grade of grinding for an espresso is achieved when 25 ml of coffee is obtained in 25 seconds, using 7 g of ground coffee with a steam pressure set at 9 bar
  • There are many grind sizes: coarse, medium, fine, extra fine and Turkish, the finer the grinder, the fewer pieces of actual coffee beans remain in the coffee powder
  • Contrary to popular belief, coffee strength is determined by the ratio of coffee grinds to water during the brewing process, not during the roasting process
  • Espresso isn’t a coffee roast or variety of coffee bean. Some coffee beans are ground finely to be used in the preparation of espresso, which is created using a high-pressure brewing method with finely ground coffee beans
  • The grind determines the length of time the water should be in contact with the coffee while brewing. Therefore, a too fine grind produces bitter coffee with too much sediment, and a too coarse grind brews weak, flavorless coffee
  • Black coffee with no additives contains no calories (good news for all fitness coffee-lovers)
  • The rule of thumb for coffee grind is: a faster water infusion requires a finer grind. For example, if you use an espresso machine, the water is only in contact with the coffee for a brief time and thus requires a fine grin
  • The original coffee-brewing method involved boiling the whole roasted beans in hot water while agitating them. This was, of course, before the first grinding methods were developed

As you have read, the backbone of great coffee is none other than the perfect coffee grounds. Don’t look at your grinds as just another part of making coffee, see them as an invaluable tool for controlling your brew and hence, a cup of coffee.

Perfect Gifts For Coffee Lovers On Christmas

coffee gifts ideas christmas
Coffee lovers will be smitten with these gifts.

Exchanging gifts can be one of the most exciting parts of Christmas! It comes with the nervousness of watching your family’s and friends’ faces as they open the presents you got for them. It can also turn extremely awkward if you fail to give them something they like and they have to lie their way through to convince you that they did like it. We all know what that “thank you! It’s really nice...” means when it’s said with an undertone of embarrassment and disappointment. It can be hard to find the perfect gift, but for us coffee lovers, this is an easy job.

There are plenty options your caffeine addict friends would absolutely adore. Give them the opportunity to try new ways to brew coffee or taste new products, and you’ll have won this year’s festivities! Coffee has the power to lighten our mood, so share a mug with everyone you love on Christmas morning and let it be a day full of love, laughter, and joy. Start picking among some of these gifts for coffee lovers.

Cold-brew coffee maker
Prepare a glorious cold-brew with a specialized maker. An authentic coffee lover knows the difference between iced coffee and cold-brewed coffee. The magic behind the extraction process is what makes the difference! A cold-brew coffee maker will let you extract the fats, oils, and soluble from coffee but it will leave its chemical structures relatively intact, resulting in a rich and flavorful beverage less acidic and with a fuller body. It’s simply perfect for the summer, although not so much for winter… You can find some great options right here and here.

Coffee cup warmer
All that office work can distract people from those truly important things… like coffee. Don’t you just hate when you get so absorbed by your job that you forget your glorious little mug sitting right there waiting for you to enjoy it? Only to find out that’s already cold. Way to go, workaholic. But fear no more, coffee cup warmers are here to save your day. Give yourself or someone else a nice little present and say goodbye to cold cups of coffee! Mr. Coffee Mug Warmer is great for this, or if you feel a little ambitious, try this mug warmer with Bluetooth integrated to listen to music while you enjoy your coffee time.

Hand-held espresso maker
Thank God for the 21st century. Technology has now made it possible for us to have our espresso anywhere we go. Enjoy it in your travels, while camping, at work, at your friend’s house. Espresso's fun doesn’t need to end at your favorite cafe. A handheld espresso maker allows you to do it by only adding hot water and some finely ground coffee. You don’t even need electricity because they can work with human power to produce the necessary pressure to brew an espresso. Find them right here or here and let espresso bless every day of your life!

Cookie Monster mug
Cuteness overload is here thanks to this absolutely adorable mug! It’s a perfect gift for a friend with a unique and quirky personality. It’s handmade and holds your chocolate cookies as well as your coffee. You can also find many mugs like this, but with different designs, it’s just great to fill that cuteness need of our hearts.

Grinder
You will never have the freshest cup of joe than when you grind the beans yourself.  For coffee aficionados, this experience is something absolutely worth having. Because coffee tends to get stale quickly, brewing pre-grounded coffee might always result in a lack of coffee’s original flavor. So pick a grinder as a gift and the lucky soul you get to give it to will thank you forever. Find a fantastic hand grinder right here!

Coffee basket
A great complement to any present you choose is a selection of great coffee products. Pick a basket or prepare a cute bag and fill it with all your love (and all the love you know your friend feels for coffee). At That Coffee Roasters’ online shop, you’ll find a wide variety of coffee from different origins and roasting styles. It’s everything you need to create the greatest coffee gift of all times!

Famous Coffee Shops from TV and Movies You Can Visit in Real Life

Experiment what these characters did by visiting these emblematic locations!

Some of the best dialogues and storylines in movies and tv shows have been held in coffee houses. Whether they were filmed on a set or a real place, we’ve seen many of our favorite characters fall in love, laugh, and meet their fates in restaurants and coffee shops. Many of these iconic moments pivoted cinema's history and were engraved in our minds. We’ll always remember them for what they made us feel. So what if we told you that you could revisit their scenarios in real life?

If you’re a hardcore fan and love to know absolutely everything about your most beloved films and tv shows, then we might have something for you on our little list. If you also happen to be a cafes' aficionado, then today's article definitely has a lot to offer you. Relive the magic, cinematography, and art of some of the world's best productions with these coffee shops and restaurants from movies and tv shows you can visit in real life!

Speedy’s Cafe - Sherlock
This little cafe with excellent prices and food served as one of the sets for the BBC’s famous TV series, Sherlock. It was a place for many important meetings, and it actually played a role by itself in some of the episodes. Speedy’s Cafe is located in North Gower Street in London, and you can find the door of Sherlock’s and Watson’s apartment building right to its left. The production team completely repainted the cafe's interior, so if you visit it, you’ll find this new decoration remains in place, making it even truer to what you saw on-screen!

Café Des Deux Moulins - Amélie
If you’ve ever taken an interest in French films, the chances are that Amélie was one of the first ones you ever watched. If this movie enchanted you from beginning to end with its odd characters and beautiful cinematography, then we have good news for you! If you ever happen to go to Paris, you can visit Amélie’s workplace at the Café Des Deux Moulins, located at Montmartre.

Holsten’s Ice Cream Parlor - The Sopranos
Whether you loved it or hated it, the final scene of one of the greatest television series ever made a tremendous impact in pop culture. And it all happened at this eatery. You can feel what it’s like to be in the same place where Tony Soprano ordered his famous onion rings in Holsten’s, located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. After James Gandolfini  (Tony Soprano) died, its owner paid respect to the actor by closing the booth where the mafia family shared their last on-screen meal. On that table, he placed a “Reserved” sign. "It's to let the people know who come in and look at that booth. They will see the sign that it's reserved for the Soprano Family", he told the Daily News.

Monk’s Cafe (Tom’s Restaurant) - Seinfeld
This diner, located at 2880 Broadway, served as the exterior facade for Seinfeld’s fictional Monk’s Cafe. Every episode of this comedy series showed the famous neon sign at the entrance. Even though many years have passed, it stays relatively the same. The interior is also decorated with Seinfeld-related objects, so it’s a must-go if you consider yourself a real fan.

Twede’s Cafe - Twin Peaks
In 1989, director David Lynch found in Twede’s Cafe the perfect place to film its critically acclaimed TV series, Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks’ Double R Diner couldn’t have found a better setting than the romantic and mysterious aura of this iconic cafe, built in the 1940’s and located in Northbend, Washington. When you visit it, don’t forget to ask for their famous cherry pie and cup of coffee!

Did we leave any famous cafe out? Is there any fictional coffee shop you would wish was a real location? Let us know in the comments! At That Coffee Roasters, we love to remember all the ways coffee's culture has been present in our daily lives and works of art!

Do you have any other fiction coffee shop you wish it was real?

The Perfect Soundtrack for Coffee Lovers

Coffee has always been a perfect companion for many artists and musicians.

Rainy afternoons, energetic mornings, happy moments or sad weekends... It doesn’t really matter what kind of day it is, a warm cup of coffee is often the best companion to fit your mood and make you feel better. Just like music, this lovely beverage has inspired and boosted many artists around the world who have dedicated great songs and lyrics to it. That’s why we’ve put together a perfect playlist to listen to while enjoying what you love the most!

Whether you drink your coffee to wake you up in the mornings, to watch the rain falling in the coziness of your living room or as a perfect excuse to finally catch up with friends and family, we have a song and a cup of coffee for every moment. In this selection, you’ll find songs that were inspired by coffee and others that just fit perfectly that coffee mood we know so well. So without further ado, turn up the volume and enjoy!

We just couldn’t help including this soul classic released by the great Otis Redding in 1966. It will fill you with that odd sense of nostalgia for past times, and it might just be the perfect tune if you’re in a “sittin’ and talkin’ with your baby over cigarettes and coffee” mood.

The Boston-based singer and songwriter gifted us with this fun, but not very well-known, tune as part of her 1985 debut album: Step Into the Light. If you love your mornings with a bit of folk rock and a lot of caffeine, we guarantee you will love it! You’ll be full of energy and good vibes to start your day.

Nothing says Sunday morning like Sunrise, by Norah Jones. The successful American singer seriously knows how to keep us in bed all weekend with her soft voice and peaceful melodies. Jones gives us a perfect song for enjoying a simple latte while letting sunshine filter through the window panes.

Even if we didn’t want to include this amazing song in the list, it’d basically be a crime to leave it out! Let yourself be taken away to a classic and busy café, full of nostalgia and good times, as Sinatra timelessly sings about how much coffee grows in Brazilian fields.

Just like our coffee, we love to get exotic and unique! Give a listen to this flirty and fun song by the French duo Felipecha. Its title translates to “Coffee Morning.” If you end up dancing along with your partner while enjoying a cappuccino on a Saturday morning, well, that’s just a plus!

We could never forget our Latino roots! This classic, by Juan Luis Guerra, is absolutely beautiful and we guarantee you’ll love it. In this piece, the Dominican composer sings out his hopes that coffee will rain over the countryside and improve its people’s fortune. Now, for this particular playlist, we’re thinking about the song’s acoustic live version, which you can find in Juan Luis Guerra’s Youtube channel. The perfect tune to end the afternoon!

If you prefer to use your coffee break as a moment to be on your own with your thoughts and do some thinking, then Left Alone, by Fiona Apple, is your perfect choice. Its quirky beat and clever lyrics will have you tapping to the rhythm. Piano notes will feel like raindrops falling on your city's streets.

Maybe you’re a hopeless romantic, sweet vanilla latte lover, but you’re definitely not alone. Dedicate this song to that special one who makes you feel all warm-and-fuzzy inside and ask them out to bond over some espresso!

Kids from the 80’s and the 90’s, raise your hands if you too went through an Alanis Morissette phase! We want to bring this one back for the ones who love a passionate and intellectually fueled conversation around a cappuccino. Get inspired by this piece that Morissette dedicated to her twin brother in her MTV Unplugged performance, back in 1999.

Do you like to sip some black coffee before hitting the road? This piece is full of the best blues and rock ever made to fit that mood. And if you’re one of those who knows that coffee beats tea anytime, English vocalist Steve Marriott completely agrees with you, so don’t let his origins fool you!

11. The Heart of Life by John Mayer

Do you need a coffee's boost to make you feel better and get you out of that gloomy mood? Then maybe you should drink it with this song, but we do warn you: it might get you emotional in noo time. You don’t have to worry, Mayer’s performance will remind you that things are always okay in the end and that fear is just a friend that’s misunderstood.

That’s the end of our selection! Did we leave one out? Is there a special song that always gets you in that coffee cup kind of mood? Let us know in the comments what you think about this song list and which others would you add. After all, what better way to fill yourself with positive energy than enjoying those things you love? That’s exactly what we do every day, here, in That Coffee Roasters!

Are you in the mood for a cup of coffee? Listen to these songs while at it!
