A Medical Opinion: Coffee & Health

Health
Coffee, like all things, can be beneficial in moderation.

Years have gone by since some old habits died out. The smoking indoors, the drinking and many other habits have changed in the past 50 years. People are more and more conscious of their health and are used to taking the healthier routes to everything. All, but coffee. With many claiming coffee is a dangerous chemical we consume without the notion of its dangers, many people have sought assistance from professionals. And health experts have a lot to say about this caffeinated beverage.

So we decided to take matters into our own hands when it comes to sharing this news. Let’s break some health myths surrounding coffee, shall we? We got the assistance of a medical professional, and we’ll break it down for you!

Coffee is bad for blood pressure
This is FALSE! Coffee is excellent when consumed in moderation. Chemicals in coffee distend blood vessels, making your blood pressure levels drop slightly. This is great for hypertensive people but bad for hypotensive people. Drink it in moderation.

Coffee can make you lose weight
This is TRUE! But in moderation. Coffee is a metabolic accelerant, which means that you can increase the speed at which you burn calories. But beware, more than your typical take on coffee is dangerous; it can lower your metabolic rate.
Coffee can make you smaller
This is FALSE! There's a dubious belief that if you drink coffee while growing up, you'll stay short. That's a strange myth, and while coffee is not recommended to small child and adolescents, it's more for the over stimuli than for any relation with shortness.

Coffee helps you lower your cholesterol
This is TRUE! Coffee contains cafestol, and this compound is a powerful ally of good cholesterol. This compound, however, it’s one of the least visually appealing in the cups: it gives it that oily sheen on top of your cup. So, if your cup contains it, you’re having cafestol and all its benefits.

Coffee is bad for migraines
This is FALSE! Au contraire, my friend. Coffee or more likely caffeine is found in the best medications for headaches. Remember we mentioned distended blood vessels? Well, migraine is caused by compressed brain blood vessels, and when caffeine kicks in, it helps the calming medication reach the right places. Caffeine is as good as sugar to relieve migraines. So, drink a small bit of sweetened coffee with your migraine medication to kick it off the right way.

What Can I Do with My Leftover Coffee?

Sometimes we make much more coffee than we intended. Or maybe things came up, and we left our brew unattended and left to get cold. This doesn’t mean coffee is gone to waste, reusing it is always the best alternative. Once you know what to do with your extra brewed coffee, a little too much coffee can become a delicious or useful blessing.

That Coffee Roasters suggests measuring your coffee with care before brewing it if you don’t want to have an extra and cold coffee. But in the case it happens, we offer you some alternatives for it. There’s no excuse for waste.

Some alternatives for making the most out of the leftover coffee
There are plenty of recipes that need coffee in their preparation, leftover coffee is a great way to use it for your desserts or even some meals. Let’s review some.

In past articles, we’ve explored some traditional recipes that call for coffee like tiramisu or coffee soaked ladyfingers layered with whipped custard and cocoa powder, but a dash of creativity can take you to new culinary levels.

Cooking with the leftover coffee: think about it, extra coffee is essentially coffee-flavored water. You can use leftover coffee in your steak marinade, for example. If you make a fruit compote, try using your brew instead of water for the perfect breakfast topping. If you really want to be efficient and have a 2-in-1 breakfast, you could even cook your morning oatmeal in coffee instead of regular water, you put your own limits!

The leftover coffee can also add an extra touch of acidity to most recipes. Experiment with vinaigrettes by changing the vinegar for coffee. Create your own caffeinated barbeque sauce or chili.

Using coffee as a water substitute for baking: similar to cooking, just change water for coffee in a baking recipe. This might work for a cake or brownie mix for a rich and delicious treat.

Coffee doesn’t go bad immediately, you can put your coffee in the fridge and save it for baking later. Just don’t let it sit longer than a couple days, you don’t want to bite into a cake and discover old coffee flavor.

Making coffee ice cubes and smoothies: iced coffee can get messy and watered down before you can drink it all. Coffee ice cubes can improve that. Just add your leftover coffee into an ice cube tray and let it freeze overnight. That way your iced coffee stays cold and undiluted for a longer time.

Now, take coffee ice cubes to the next level by making a coffee smoothie. Sounds great, huh? And it's so simple! You just have to blend coffee ice cubes, some fruit like bananas, and a cup of milk (or even yogurt) together to get a cool caffeinated drink. You can also change the bananas for cocoa powder, cinnamon, or vanilla for a flavor boost.

Remember: the key is to be creative, avoid waste and, above all, enjoy the results! Please let us know your opinions on the corresponding section and don’t forget to follow us at our That Coffee Roasters social networks!

Top 10 Coolest Coffee Scenes in Films

Coffee is part of American culture by now, and it's no surprise that it takes part in our movie history, even in some of the most iconic scenes ever filmed.
Coffee...it is part of our morning routines, part of our social gatherings, it can be served at any meal and event, even funerals! It has become such a staple that if someone says ‘’hot beverage’’ you’ll more often than not, think of a steaming, dark cuppa Joe.

In that order of ideas, Coffee is so popular and is so related with our culture that we’ve been putting it on film ever since the very first movies, and it has resulted in some truly iconic and top notch scenes, here is the official That Coffee Roasters TOP 10 COOLEST COFFEE SCENES IN FILMS.

Number 10: The ‘’Foamy Latte’’ Scene from ZOOLANDER. (2001).
It is exaggerated, it is ridiculous, it is an stereotypical example of what an undesirable boss looks like. It’s none other than this scene acted by Will Ferrell (in the role of Mugatu, the fashion world villain of the film), in which he graphicly describes to his assistant the effects that milk causes to him, ordering that he never makes him lattes again, and scaring him (in a comical way) afterwards.

Number 09: Kato’s ‘’Coffee machine’s scene’’ from THE GREEN HORNET. (2011)
This impressive scene involved a nearly Over-sized hand-built coffee maker, which Kato (Jay Chou) used to make an espresso. The most satisfying part, however, was his ability to quickly and confidently finish it with a fancy, wavy milk-pour.

Number 08: Amélie ‘’covering for a friend’’ scene from AMÉLIE (2001)
In order to bring her friends together, Amélie(Audrey Tautou) takes the innocent approach of spilling hot coffee on Georgette and tricking her into barging into the restroom while the character of Joseph is inside. The momentary scalding turns for the best in the end, as Amélie vents some loud steam to cover up the sounds of her friend’s ecstasy

Number 07: Kujan’s ‘’coffee mess’’ scene from THE USUAL SUSPECTS (1995)
Nothing gives a buzz of tension to a scene like a coffee cup shattering on the floor; but doing it three times in a row? Agent Kujan (Chazz Palminteri) makes an absolute mess by throwing his coffee mugs all over the floor on the final scene of “The Usual Suspects,” and it’s one of the great “a-ha!” moments in all film history.

Number 6: Tommy’s ‘’coffee to go’’ scene from GOODFELLAS (1990)
Stacks (Samuel L. Jackson) get an unexpected visit when Tommy (Joe Pesci) shows up to shoot him straight in the head, the shocks lies partially on Tommy and his relaxed attitude, asking a friend Frank Sivero character to make a pot of coffee. After the hit, Tommy tells Frankie to make the coffee to go and then nags him for not understanding that the whole request was a joke.

Number 05: Travolta’s ‘’ThankS for the coffee’’ scene from SWORDFISH (2001).
There is not much to say about this new millenium film, but the pizzazz and cockiness that John Travolta exudes while finishing a black espresso and standing up from the table where he’s surrounded by FBI agents and simply telling them that he has to ‘’jet’’ and thanking them for the coffee cannot be denied, the nerve on that man is as strong as that coffee!

Number 04: The ‘’coffee shop fake phone call’’ scene from BEFORE SUNRISE (1995)
This movie from the late 90’s stars Ethan Hawke and is  part of a romantic drama trilogy. It talks about Jesse, a young American, who meets Celine, a French student, on a train going to Vienna. In this iconic scene, they admit their love for each other while having a coffee, while sharing an imaginary phone conversation.

Numer 03: ‘’Good cop vs. Evil Mafia boss’’ scene from HEAT (1995)
De Niro plays the villain of the film and on this particular scene, he sees his adversary face to face, and even have a cup of coffee and discuss their conflict (between the occasional threat) over a cup of joe just like anyone else, De Niro also has one of the most intense lines on the film in this scene, saying to the cop he’s meeting with: ‘’What if you do got me boxed in and I gotta put you down? Cause no matter what, you will not get in my way. We’ve been face to face, yeah. But I will not hesitate. Not for a second.’’

Number 02: The ‘’Knock it off’’ Tarantino cameo from PULP FICTION (1994)
Travolta and Jackson, what an iconic duo, and they get to share a scene with the director Quentin Tarantino, and also share a ‘’gourmet’’ cup of coffee with him, right before he starts berating them for their incompetence and prior actions on the film, the dialogues make the scene just unforgettable.

Number 01: The opening scene from BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S (1961)
This particular scene made history biy its own, we not only get to see the Hollywood Icon Audrey Hepburn, we get to see her in her most glamorous ensemble ever, that marvelous black gown with matching gloves and a pearl necklace that went on forever, non satisfied by that, she breaks that dashing debonair look by having a croissant an a coffee out of a paper bag from a  coffee shop and eating them just like anyone else, proving that any girl can have her very own cinderella story….after her morning coffee, of course.

What are you waiting for? Go home, make yourself a big pot of coffee and have a movie marathon, watching all these amazing films! This list was brought by your servers on That Coffee Roasters! Don’t hesitate on following us on our social media and comment on the section below.

Colombian Tinto 101: Is it Coffee?

Tinto is the popular go-to beverage in Colombia, and they distinguish it from coffee.

Colombia is a country with massive renown for their coffee. Producing 100% Arabica beans and prized for its clean, characteristic taste, medium/high acidity and body, and a pronounced, complete aroma. It comes in second place among the world’s top coffee-producing countries (after its Latin-American brother, Brazil), but is considered by many Caffeine lovers to be the first country as for the quality of the coffee beans.

Regions like those of Caldas, Risaralda, and Quindio, with their big tropical forests growing at high altitudes, host huge plantations of Arabica coffee. Colombian coffee, ranging from the strong-flavored Medellin to the delicate, intricate Armenia variety, is exported and greatly appreciated all over the world.

However, like many other Latin-American coffee growing countries, finding a top-notch quality cup of coffee on the streets can be quite a challenge. A notion we have all posed ourselves is the following: if countries like Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia are producing some of the best beans in the world, then they should have superior coffee available everywhere, don’t they?

The reality can be quite different from expected, in big cities like Lima and Bogota, artisanal coffee shops have flourished, reclaiming some of the top beans for themselves. But most of the Colombian population is not drinking a pour over of a single origin, as a matter of fact, most of these nations are drinking instant coffee.

The best quality beans are exported out of the country and sold to places like the US and Europe, therefore, the people in Colombia are basically left with whatever remains. Often, they turn these unsuitable beans into instant coffee. In Cartagena, as in many other places around Colombia, they have turned these “dregs” into something different and with a unique flavor. A beverage named “tinto”. In many Latin-American countries, tinto might be a word associated with red wine (as in, vino tinto) but in Colombia, tinto has a different significance.

Despite the massive coffee bean exportation, coffee in Colombia is widely consumed and comes in three main variations, which are tinto, cortado and chaqueta.

Tinto coffee is the most common coffee in Colombia. It’s a small-cup-served black coffee, similar to an espresso in that matter. Tinto coffee in Colombia is often fixed with the less fine coffee beans, the ones that don’t get exported.

To the average coffee lover, the word “cortado” may suggest a very small cup of coffee, like the Italian “corto”, but in Colombia a cortado coffee is a cup of tinto with the addition of hot milk, similar to the Italian “macchiato” that we see in most coffee shops.

Now, a chaqueta coffee in Colombia is a coffee laced with aguapanela, a syrup made with raw sugar melted in hot water. Aguapanela is used in Colombia to prepare other traditional beverages: in the summertime, it’s often served cold with the addition of fresh lemon juice, while in the mountain regions it’s served warm, usually along with salty cheese.

Colombian Tinto 101

Fun Trivia: you can’t go more than 50 feet in Colombia without someone stopping you and offering a cup of tinto. Sometimes you will see men pushing these carts with brightly colored thermoses lined up on top, and other times, men just carry the thermoses over their backs, with little, white plastic cups poking out.

If you translate tinto to English it reads “ink”, and the coffee that they serve in Colombia is of a thick, dark nature. The brew is often sweet, and sometimes it’s flavored with canela (cinnamon) and occasionally, you’ll see a piece of South American cheese floating on top of it.

Colombians are quite happy with their tinto. As a matter of fact, a couple of years ago, Colombia even imported the rejected beans of Ecuador in order to make more of their beloved tinto for local consumption.

But tinto is more than just a variety of coffee. It’s part of many Colombian social practices, tinto is highly regarded in their culture. It’s seen as a way to start the day with energy and glee. You offer someone a cup of tinto and it’s a way of saying “hey, let’s get to know each other over a cup of coffee”. A few years back, they came up with a massive publicity campaign that had the slogan of “Tomémonos un tinto, seamos amigos”, which translates to “Let’s have a tinto, let’s be friends”. Today the before mentioned men pushing the carts are more than happy to stop and have a chat while they pour you a simple tinto, always served in a plastic cup. For the small price of COP$ 300 (that’s about 15 cents), at the end of the day you not only can indulge in this modest cup of java, but, in a pretty addition, you could make a friend.

Coffee is as important in Colombia as tea is in England.
