7 Latte Artists So Talented You'll Never Want To Drink Anything They Brew

It’s been a few years since Instagram became the land of baristas and latte artists. If you haven’t posted a pic of your cup of coffee or your favorite coffee mug, have you truly lived? Probably not. And sometimes, when we see what some baristas are capable of when brewing a cup of latte, we really wish we could frame their work instead of drinking it.

This year, the World Latte Art Championship celebrated some of the best artists around the world. The event took place in the city of Budapest, and it gathered the champions from each country. Here we’ve collected some of the best so you can find them on Instagram. Follow their work and fall in love with a new latte cup every day!

1 Arnon Thitiprasert - Thailand

Arnon started working as a barista in 2007. He then proceeded to fund his own business called Ristr8to Lab in the city of Chiang Mai, Thailand. He believes the secret behind great latte art is simple: you only need practice and creativity. When asked when he started to get involved in the coffee industry, he said “In Australia, when I saw the 2007 World Latte Art Champion Jack Hanna, who was working in the same cafe pouring his latte art in the morning. Since then I have been practicing, aiming to become World Latte Art Champion like him one day.”

2 Michalis Karagiannis - Greece

Michalis has been working as a barista for the past seven years. He gives seminars on latte art and claims he loves everything about coffee: taste, aromas, origins, specialty coffee – but especially latte art! His secret? Practice, perfectly steamed milk, patience, dedication.

3 Agnieszka Rgewska - Poland

Agnieszka has accumulated 9 years of experience in the coffee industry. She says latte art was her first interest and now she works as a barista trainer and a coffee consultant. For her, it started as a part-time job and then it became her passion. She got the third place in this year’s championship!

4 Jervis Tan - Singapore

Jervis has a mobile coffee company, and he brings coffee to all regions of his country. He was asked to learn how to make coffee when he was working in an Italian restaurant, and ever since, his love for coffee hasn’t stopped. He suggests beginners make sure they dominate the basics patterns before trying more complex things.

5 Matteo Beluffi - Italy
Italian Matteo Beluffi also supports the idea that training is the most important part of dominating latte art. He was Italy’s national champion this 2017 and has been participating since 2014.

6 Aaron Shin - Australia

Aaron had a very different life before discovering coffee. He studied architecture and enrolled in the Korean military forces. “I came to Australia for a holiday three years ago and immediately fell in love with its coffee culture. I now call Melbourne home and work at Short Black Café,” he explains. He claims that you need to understand and respect the basic foundations of coffee before dominating latte art.

7 Sebastian Farces - Romania

Sebastian is 28 years old and has been brewing coffee for 10 years. He’s now a barista trainer at Barista School and has been competing since 2012. “I used to be a bartender, and then I realized that I love coffee more than mixing alcohol,” Sebastian explains. Can’t say we blame him…

Before You Die: The Bucket List for Coffee Addicts

Pack your bags and go on an adventure!

If you only had one wish before leaving this world, what would you ask for? Would it be more time to share with your loved ones? Would it be one final good meal? Would it be one last glorious, sublime, perfect cup of your favorite coffee?... No. That’s too much, right? Yeah, we wouldn’t do that. Of course not. We enjoy coffee, but even we have boundaries. We’re not addicts. And anyway, there are more important things... isn't it?

Who are we kidding? We would totally do that. But, hey, don’t judge us! Napoleon Bonaparte was known for asking a spoonful of coffee on his deathbed, so we wouldn’t be the first ones to do it. We’re not totalitarian conquerors, we know, but we can love caffeine just the same. Actually, why not start our coffee bucket list today and tell the world just how much we love coffee? All we need is to define where to go first. What are those once-in-a-lifetime moments that every coffee lover must live? Well, we’ve gathered here the ones we believe you shouldn’t miss so buckle up and let’s go on an adventure!

6. Go back to where it all started and witness Ethiopia’s coffee ceremony

Considered to be our favorite drink’s birthplace, Ethiopia has enchanted the whole world with its beautiful and exotic coffee culture. History and spirituality fuse in this wonderful ceremony, that’s usually performed as a social activity for friends and visitors. It takes from 2 to 3 hours to finish, and it’s usually done by the women of the house. It involves a whole process of preparing raw coffee beans and brewing them into finished cups of coffee.

Ethiopian coffee ceremony has a strong connection with Islam. Each cup that results from this ritual is said to transform the spirit and be a blessing for those who drink it. With incense burning to ward off evil spirits and roasted coffee's aromas invading the atmosphere, this Ethiopian tradition is truly a sight to witness. Connect with the most powerful part of your spirit and take a trip through the amazing coffee culture from the place where it originated first.

5. Live the energy of Vienna’s famous coffee houses

UNESCO named them "World’s Intangible Heritage" in 2011, and it’s not hard to see why. Austrians are truly proud of their coffee culture. Ancient coffeehouses thrive on Vienna's streets, standing as little relics inside of which you can enjoy the best of the Austrian capital’s coffee. What makes them so special though? Their history, of course. You won’t find a stronger coffeehouse culture as you will in Vienna. They helped to shape Viennese’s social practices and rituals. They were also the scenario where many poets and artists found inspiration and wrote the best of their work.

Austrian writer, Stefan Zweig, described them like this: " ...actually a sort of democratic club, open to everyone for the price of a cheap cup of coffee, where every guest can sit for hours with this little offering, to talk, write, play cards, receive post, and above all consume an unlimited number of newspapers and journals." If your bohemian soul cries for a place where you can sit for hours, watching people pass by and thinking about life, what are you waiting for? Vienna’s coffeehouses are all you need and more!

4. Go to a World Latte Art Championship

If you believe nothing can compare to the sweet flavors of a cup of latte in the middle of the afternoon, then probably you’re also a fan of latte art. Attending to a World Latte Art Championship will be a heaven-like experience that you won’t forget anytime soon. Watch the best baristas and coffee lovers create beautiful works of art made of milk, cream, and espresso. This year’s competition was held in Budapest. Are you ready to pack your bags and follow these artists wherever they go next year?

3. Take a coffee bath on a Japanese spa

If you thought our previous coffee wishes were a little bit too extreme, how do you feel about actually bathing in coffee? It’s possible to do it in a Japanese spa called Hakone Kowakien Yunessun, located about an hour and a half from Tokyo. You can find among its services a possibility to bath in wine, tea, and other types of liquids. Their coffee bath is made of low heat Nel Drip style brewed coffee, and they assure it has “recharging, relaxing, skin beautifying effects.” But, oh well, now that we think about it, Japanese have a very curious coffee culture, with cat cafés in which you can pet felines while enjoying your cup of coffee. There’s something for every taste in the land of the rising sun.

2. Fall in love with true espresso shots on the streets of Rome

There are very few people as passionate about their coffee culture as Italians are about theirs. You can't blame them. They’re the creators of a beverage that has conquered the entire world: the espresso. That robust and contrasting shot that’s bound wake you up and improve your day right from the first sip. If you want to live an authentic Italian experience, don’t ask for anything that isn’t pure espresso outside of breakfast time, and don’t forget to take an Italian coffee tour. Antico Caffè Greco is a must, for example. Writers and composers like Goethe, Wagner, and Byron were regulars there. It has existed since 1760!

1. Feel the passion of coffee production in Colombia’s Coffee Triangle

We owe Colombia some of the best coffee in the whole world. Want to learn how it’s produced and processed? Then you definitely shouldn’t miss the chance of visiting the famous Colombia’s Coffee Triangle. Named a "World’s Heritage Site" by UNESCO, this territory is home to a huge part of Colombian coffee production. It covers a large mountainous region in the departments of Caldas, Quindio, and Risaralda. Because of its climate conditions, altitude, and soils, it’s a perfect landscape to harvest some of the most delicious coffee beans. It’s full of passionate people whose entire lives revolve around coffee. There are great hosts for tourists and many hostels and inns where you can enjoy a personal experience with coffee.

We bet that knowing Colombia’s Coffee Triangle could signify a fantastic experience for anyone who wants to live coffee as something more than just a beverage you drink to stop you from dozing off. Besides, this place is also the home of That Coffee Roasters’ founders and workers! We’ll always be proud of our origins!

Meet Some of the World’s Best Baristas in 2017

What does it take to be one of the best?

Every year since 2000, the best baristas from each country compete in the World Barista Championship. The premier competition, organized by World Coffee Events, was held this year in Seoul, South Korea, and it received the most talented people from around the globe to give a demonstration of the beautiful art of brewing coffee.

Six competitors faced each other in the Championship’s finals, on 12 November at Café Show in the South Korean capital. They presented 15-minute routines and served four espressos, four milk-based, and four signature beverages to a panel of four sensory judges. The results were in, and we’re here to meet the three best baristas from 2017!

Kapo Chiu

The third place in this year’s World Barista Championship belongs to Hong Kong representative, Kapo Chiu! He’s been participating since 2013 and earned the second place in 2014’s competition. Owner of his own roaster company, Cupping Room Coffee Roasters, Kapo Chiu “would love to see being a barista as being a sustainable long-term career for those who have passion in this industry, which would involve companies paying more, and providing a career path for coffee professionals.”

Coffee has always been a passion of his, but it wasn’t until recently that he started working full-time with it. He began as a home barista, visiting cafes, buying beans, and trying different brewing methods at home. Now he’s one of the best baristas in the world! Find more about his story following him on Instagram @kapoccino_.

Miki Suzuki

Second place was conquered by Japanese barista Miki Suzuki from Maruyama Coffee. She’s the most decorated Japanese barista and has won the first place three times before! She never expected to find herself making a living out of her love for coffee since she comes from a small town near Tokyo. But now she considers herself very fortunate to have made it this far.

“I’m so delighted to be a barista. The coffee industry has been life-changing for me. I have forged many important relationships with coffee producer, trainers, my teammates, and my customers. These experiences made me grow as a professional barista and helps me to appreciate coffee truly”, explains Suzuki. She thinks herself shy and never thought about joining competitions, but as her colleagues were all doing it, she dared, signed in, and has been very lucky ever since. Check her out on Instagram @mkszk57!

Dale Harris

Finally, British barista, Dale Harris, earned the first place, beating a total of 58 representatives from different countries. The first-time winner had been participating in the competition since 2009, slowly but steadily making his way to the top! “I’ve worked in coffee for a long while; competition has been a big part of my time in coffee but it’s also the excitement of new flavours, working with passionate people, and seeing how something seemingly simple can lead to incredible complexity – in the cup, economically—bringing lots of very different people and experiences together”, Harris said when asked to talk about himself and his work in the coffee industry.

The UK champion hosted the judges between two tables and provided service from both sides, even asking the judges not to watch him prepare the coffees. His routine focused on the connection between the flavors experienced in the cup, and the actions that shape them at the origin. Finally, Harris revealed his coffee and its roots towards the end of his presentation – an entirely washed 2L28 from Finca Las Brumas in El Salvador, and he explained the importance of context when it comes to an understanding the coffee’s value. You can follow Harris on Instagram @acostuiccoffee and learn more about his work!
