Have You Eaten Coffee Beans?

Eating coffee beans or drinking coffee
Roasted beans have more antioxidants than a cup of coffee.

As you’ve probably noticed from reading previous blogs, coffee is extremely versatile. The caffeine contained in it can be seen in a wide variety of products, such as medicines and skin creams. The coffee itself can also be used as fertilizer and to prepare homemade beauty products. Currently, in the field of beverages, their use is imperative; it’s impossible to count the number of recipes, including those of cold brews and iced coffee, that can be found in books and websites. In the end, a lot has been said about coffee, but one question remains unanswered: is it convenient to eat coffee beans?

The truth about eating coffee beans

A particular fact to take into account when thinking about eating the coffee bean, is that it could actually be considered a seed found inside a fruit (the berry). Currently, in the food industry, there are many edible seeds, such as poppy seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, and chia seeds, among others; all of them are used in recipes or even are eaten raw without any problem. In that case, when talking about coffee, you can also assume that the bean has the potential to be consumed, either raw or roasted, thanks to its seed qualities.

The question is: can you eat coffee beans? In view of the above,  yes, you can. But now comes the doubt, does eating these seeds benefit or harm your health? That Coffee Roasters gives you the answer.

Eating coffee beans: beneficial or detrimental?

When talking about the effects of coffee on the body, it should be noted that beans, whether raw or roasted, tend to maintain a higher quantity of substances that decrease when the coffee is brewed. In general, coffee compounds such as catechols tend to increase stomach acid causing, in several cases, heartburns. Regarding the consumption of coffee beans, this effect could be magnified, causing more discomfort.

Likewise, you should take into consideration that the recommended daily amount of caffeine is 400 mg. Considering that coffee beans contain a greater amount of this type of compound, their consumption should be moderate, since this number can be exceeded more easily and without realizing it. This type of situation can seriously harm those who suffer from coffee intolerance, certain types of heart problems and flu.

However, every negative side has its positive counterpart. Coffee contains antioxidants that prevent aging and the appearance of cardiovascular diseases. If a cup of Joe, mixed with water and milk, provides you with a large portion of these molecules, imagine how much a simple coffee bean can give you. In addition, coffee has been shown to reduce the risk of oral cancer by 50%, so the consumption of coffee seeds could enhance this benefit. And if you need more reasons to bite a couple of these beans, you should know they can stimulate hair growth and help you detoxify the liver.

With the above, it is clear that the potential of coffee beans lies in the number of substances they contain. As long as they are not ground and brewed, these seeds preserve the property of magnifying the coffee effects you know so well. With all this information you are now ready to start consuming your coffee in a new way, either alone or with a chocolate coating.

If you want to enjoy the benefits of coffee in a more traditional way, you can always contact us through That Coffee Roasters’ social networks and check out the variety of Colombian coffees that we offer. Do you still want to try the green or roasted coffee beans? No problem, we also offer a great selection of these tasty seeds.

Coffee Import for Coffee Roasters

Follow the coffee import process
Every process begins with the selection of the product and, in the world of coffee, this step is one of the most important.

The coffee business is expanding. Many people join the industry every day, whether as a roaster, supplier, wholesaler or as a coffee shop. It’s a market that offers many benefits and whose fans are constantly growing. A big advantage, don’t you think? So why not join this trend and start your own business? If your dream is to enter the coffee import work field or just understand how the product you consume comes to your table, That Coffee Roasters brings you a brief introduction to this world on today's blog.

Importing coffee to the U.S.

Before beginning any relevant procedure, it’s necessary to know which authorities you will need to contact to bring the product to the country. US Customs & Border Protection (CBP), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and US Department of Agriculture (USDA) are the institutions in charge of allowing legal access to any coffee cargo, so you should familiarize yourself with their functions to be ready to start importing.

Other considerations to keep in mind are that both roasted coffee beans and green coffee beans can be brought to the United States without any restrictions, and there’s no limit to the amount you can import. The only product that is not accepted is the coffee berry that can be considered a health hazard.

Before ordering the shipment of goods

The first step to follow before transporting the cargo is to ensure that each bag of coffee is properly identified. All products must have the Country of Origin labeling so that the end user knows where the product they are consuming comes from. A Country of Origin certificate is also required by the International Coffee Organization and is mandatory when importing.

Another fundamental step before the arrival of the coffee shipment is to fill out an FDA Prior Notice form. You should also be aware that any foreign supplier or manufacturer of food products must be registered with the FDA before their shipment is accepted.

When the coffee shipment arrives

It’s necessary to clarify that coffee beans are duty-free according to Harmonized System Code 0901. Nevertheless, Merchandise Processing Fee and Harbor Maintenance Fee have to be paid. Likewise, the CBP will require you to acquire a customs bond, which is a form of insurance to protect the country’s interests against non-payment of taxes, fees, and duties by the importing company. How can you get this bond? Through surety licensed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

When a shipment enters the port, both the FDA and the USDA perform inspections. Both institutions regulate the entry of several types of products, including food, ensuring that they do not pose a risk to public health and comply with all requirements. The cost of FDA inspection varies depending on the size of the cargo. In these cases, there may be additional costs if the presence of a representative is requested, if additional paperwork is required, and if the inspection is not done on time and this incurs demurrage payments.

In addition to the procedures required for the admission of these types of products to the United States, you should also keep in mind that the country of origin may also have its own regulations when allowing a shipment to leave its territory. This is a factor you should also consider before starting your coffee import business.

To learn more about this coffee work field, don’t hesitate to contact That Coffee Roasters through social networks. As coffee roasters, we have a long history of importing green beans, and a great variety of quality coffees from Colombia, you just have to try our products to see for yourself!

Coffee Science: Caffeine in Beauty Products

Caffeine is used in both commercial beauty products and homemade coffee-based preparations.

Many think that the properties of coffee can only be exploited when it is brewed and drunk, but this is not the case. Today, caffeine and even coffee grounds are used to create a variety of caffeinated medicines for certain disorders and beauty products that aim to rejuvenate the skin and improve its elasticity. It could be said that its use is more frequent in the beauty industry where its properties are exploited to the maximum to achieve the best results. Do you want to know why? That Coffee Roasters gives you the answer!

Why you should use caffeine-based beauty products

In general, caffeine is defined as a substance that suppresses sleep and migraines. However, its use extends to many other fields such as the beauty sector, where it has found a fairly important market niche. But why? Why has it been so well received in this industry, and why is it used in creams to reduce wrinkles, cellulite, and fat cells?

The answer lies in the properties attributed to caffeine. On one hand, this substance works as a blood vessel constrictor and therefore helps to reduce swelling. On the other hand, even though excessive coffee consumption can cause dehydration, caffeine can function as a diuretic that, when applied to the skin, reduces fluids in fat cells. As you can see, both qualities could temporarily help you to have a tighter tummy, reduce the waist and thighs centimeters, and eliminate those dark and puffy under-eye circles.

Likewise, it has been proven that caffeine also contains antioxidants that prevent the appearance of free radicals, slowing down the aging process, and protecting skin cells. In the latter case, Harvard studies have found that people who consume over three cups of caffeinated coffee a day actually have a lower risk of suffering from skin cancer than those who consume one cup a month.

Finally, another of the wonderful qualities of coffee and its caffeine is the lightening effect on the skin; as a blood vessel constrictor, this miraculous substance has the ability to reduce redness and provide a smoother skin.

Now the question should not be “why use coffee as an ingredient in your beauty products”, but “why not?”

Homemade caffeine-based beauty products

Now, in this section, you’ll be able to witness all the virtues of caffeine with some coffee-based products that you can make at home. You don’t need a lot of ingredients, just to make a good cup of joe to use a good cup of coffee grounds.

Scalp scrub

This type of conditioner is very beneficial for those suffering from oily hair, psoriasis or dermatitis. Coffee, in this case, will work as an antioxidant and antibacterial, as well as a color shade, as it can paint gray hair and revive the dark color (not recommended for blond or light hair). To make this product at home, all you need is conditioner, coffee grounds, and tea tree oil.

Under eye cream

With this product, you can see the effects of caffeine in action. Its role as an antioxidant will prevent the early formation of wrinkles, and its property as a vessel constrictor will reduce the swelling and dark color under the eyes. To make a cream that gives you these benefits, all you have to do is mix coffee grounds, aloe vera, and vitamin E oil, then apply the product around the eyes for over 10 minutes.

Mask and skin scrub

This exfoliator mask has several properties thanks to the ingredients it uses. To make it, you only need sugar, which acts as a chemical-free exfoliator to remove dead cells; coconut oil, which provides vitamins and minerals to hydrate the skin; cinnamon to protect the skin from bacterias; and ground coffee, which provides the caffeine needed to reduce puffiness and lighten skin spots.

Coffee, besides being one of the most consumed beverages in the world, has the potential to become one of the most versatile elements in the food and beauty industry. Its benefits are endless and this is known by coffee companies such as That Coffee Roasters. By understanding the benefits coffee can offer, we strive to create a wide variety of quality products that provide consumers with all the properties of caffeine. Do You Want to Grow a Coffee Tree at Home?

If your idea is to produce some homemade coffee, you must be patient. The coffee trees take a minimum of 3 or 4 years to mature.

Last week, That Coffee Roasters taught you how to roast coffee beans at home. This is a very rewarding experience that any coffee lover can appreciate. But what other knowledge about coffee could you learn and apply in your home life? This time you might choose a basic process, but perhaps more complicated to accomplish: planting a coffee tree in your garden.

Although it may sound like a simple procedure, growing plants, in general, requires dedication and following certain steps, and with the coffee tree it couldn’t be any different. On today’s blog, That Coffee Roasters offers you all the information you need to know to plant your tree outside the tropical climate of countries such as Colombia and Brazil, two of the world biggest coffee producers.

How to grow a coffee tree at home

If you’re in Miami, you’ve probably succumbed to the quality of ground coffee or coffee beans that big roasting companies, such as That Coffee Roasters, have produced with quality products brought from the tropics of the continent. This constant exposure to coffee only generates more interest in learning about the subject, and many may be wondering if it’s possible to have a small plant at home outside the coffee growing areas. The reality is that it is possible to grow a coffee tree at home with proper care. Want to know how? Keep reading!

Finding the seeds

The first step will be to find the seeds to plant the tree. The ideal would be to find the fresh berries of an already constituted coffee plant. In these cases, the berry is usually opened and the beans are removed from the inside. These are fermented in water for several days and then dried in the open air until they are dry on the outside, but still moist on the inside.

If it’s not possible to get the necessary amount of red berries, you can choose recently harvested green beans. It is important that they have less than four months of harvest because it’s easier for them to germinate when they are planted.

Planting the seeds

Once the seeds are ready, you should proceed to prepare the soil, which should be clean and free of stones; in these cases, many people also use homemade fertilizers as a supplement. The most important part of this step is to put the seed in the middle of a small pot and spray it with water twice a day, without flooding the soil. The seed should be moist, not soaked in water. Then, you should allow the seed to germinate from two to five months (depending on the freshness of the seeds you have obtained). After that period, if the pot is not deep enough, it’s advisable to transplant the seed into a larger one.

Growing the tree

Nine months later the plant will have fully germinated and developed its leaves. During this time it’s necessary to water the plant once a day carefully. Depending on the area you live in, it may not be advisable to transplant the coffee plant in the garden. Extreme temperatures don’t benefit tree growth, so you should be very careful when making a decision.

To keep the coffee tree inside the house, it should be transplanted again into a larger pot and placed in a room where it receives sunlight and temperatures are kept between 45 and 80 °F.

If it’s possible to keep the tree out of the house in your home, choose an area where it doesn’t receive direct sunlight all day. Remember to water it away every day, use fertilizers and fight any pest that wants to damage your beloved plant.

Finally, you need to know that this is a matter of patience, as the process to obtain a good coffee from your coffee tree can take from 3 to 6 years. It’s a long wait, but it’s worth it. And if you’re not sure, just ask That Coffee Roasters!

As a company specialized in providing the best roasted coffee, we know what it’s like to wait for a good product that meets all your expectations. While waiting for your coffee plant to produce a good harvest, don’t hesitate to consume the best variety of coffee. Coffee Secrets: Roasting Coffee Beans at Home

Roasting coffee at home
There are several ways to roast coffee beans at home!

Every coffee enthusiast should first start by learning the different methods of making coffee. For this purpose, you can use coffee apps that you can download on different mobile devices that contain a great amount of information on the subject. Have you done it already? If you did, you probably want to move to the next level: making homemade coffee. In order to carry out this task, it will be necessary to know in depth the process of roasting the coffee bean at home.

This step is critical to get a good caffeinated beverage and that’s why That Coffee Roasters gives you a simple guide to start making homemade coffee like an expert. Want to know more? Read on and discover all the secrets of the coffee world.

What you should know about roasting coffee at home

Before you start the roasting beans, you need to know a little more about the process. It's not just about putting the green beans in the oven or in a frying pan and cooking them on the low, medium or high heat. If you want to produce a consumable coffee at home, you need to know the different steps you need to follow and the tricks you need to perform.

Roasting steps

- Generally speaking, the proper temperature for roasting a coffee bean is between 350ºF and 500ºF. However, this will depend on the method you choose to perform this task.
- Once the dry green beans to be roasted are in place, you should move them frequently to ensure that the roasting and heat are distributed evenly throughout the bean.
- You should continue to roast and move the beans for several minutes. During this period they will turn brown and after 3 or 6 minutes the beans will make an audible first crack. That sound indicates that the minimum time required to toast these small seeds has been reached.
- For a darker toast, you should continue the process for several more minutes until you hear the second crack. If a stronger color and bitter taste is desired, the beans can be roasted for another 30 seconds. After that time it is important to remove them from the fire, as they may burn.
- The next step is to cool the coffee beans and remove the chaff. This can be done by placing them on baking paper or using metal strainers to shake them. Once cold, the chaff or silver skin is removed.

Easy, isn’t it? The secret is not to let the beans burn and to keep stirring until they make the first crack and acquire the desired color. An important fact to consider is that roasted coffee beans should rest for a minimum of 12 hours before being stored and 24 hours before being ground and brewed.

Roasting methods at home

In general, the previous steps work for all of the home methods that That Coffee Roasters will describe. However, depending on the utensil used, the process can be more or less complex.

Roasting on a pan

The convenience of this method is that you don’t need any other utensils. The biggest difficulty you may have in this case is knowing how to measure the heat, a medium temperature is the most recommended one. Once you start the procedure, remember to put the beans on the pan evenly. From this moment on, you start to stir frequently, while waiting for the cracks and the desired color. You have to be very careful not to let them burn.

Roasting in the oven

As for temperature, this may depend on the oven used. It is generally advisable to start at about 500ºF. The procedure with the oven is the same as the previous one, but in this case, it’s advisable to stir in specific time intervals, since the access to the beans is more limited and you’ll have to open the appliance door frequently.

Roasting with a popcorn machine

Believe it or not, this machine can be used for roasting coffee. However, you should always keep in mind that they were not created for that purpose, so there is no guarantee that they will not be damaged in a short time period. The positive thing about this method is that this type of machine automatically stirs the beans. The first thing to do is to preheat the appliance for 30 seconds and introduce the beans quantity recommended by the machine. Once everything is in place, you must move the coffee beans with a spatula to start stirring, then you let the popcorn machine do its job. Wait for the cracks and the desired color and put the toasted beans to cool.

Here's a simple step-by-step guide to roasting coffee beans at home. The method is quite simple, you just need the necessary materials and to pay close attention to the process. It may not work out the first time, but with practice you’ll make the best homemade coffee. If you want to know more about the color and flavor of the different roasted coffees, get in touch with That Coffee Roasters.
