Painting with Coffee: Art with Aroma

Give it a try!
Painting with coffee is no different than painting with watercolors.

For the initiated in the amazing world that lies behind the cups, coffee is much more than a beverage. It’s a tradition, a personal challenge and above all, a way to enjoy flavors from all around the globe. But some have decided that it can be much more than just a culinary experience. Thus, they took coffee in a new direction and bam: painting with coffee was born. Think of the rich brown palette that comes from coffee in different concentrations, and you’re facing a world full of artistic possibilities.

Is painting with coffee possible?

While it might seem impossible, actually taking coffee and transforming it into tinctures for art is not such a new idea. For centuries, the tints of artwork had a humble origin in the natural world. For that reason, it’s not crazy to think of doing so with a staple of almost every kitchen in the world. Coffee contains many chemicals that create a distinctive brow tint, and these allow easy preparation of colors that overlapped create a beautiful painting.

Chemicals located in coffee change with the roasting process. During that time, they are caramelized and go through something called “Maillard reaction.” This reaction occurs when a carbonyl compound with an aminoacyl group, under high temperatures (over 140º C/280º F). The oxidation releases caramelized flavors, which in the case of coffee give out a dark and rich brown tint. By design or by chance, someone once though the stains from coffee cups rims on paper could create paintings. From then on, the fresh bloom of coffee painting arose. Thanks to that, many artists have devoted to painting with ochre tones from the caffeinated beverage.

Do you want to paint with coffee? Here are the instruments for your coffee painting:

  • A cup of strong coffee (pure espresso works perfectly).
  • A canvas, the size is up to you.
  • Brushes (a large one and small ones depending on your painting style).
  • A dropper.
  • Clean water.
  • A watercolor palette.
  • Salt.
  • Dry coffee grounds.

The following is the wet on wet technique, ideal for you to use if you’re a beginner at painting with coffee as an art form:

  • Put a few drops of water in each one of the compartments of the watercolor palette.
  • Add drops of espresso in each one of the compartments to create different ochre tones.
  • Paint the whole surface of the canvas with a light layer of water, to prepare the paper.
  • Leave the paper to sit out in a well-ventilated area until the canvas is only slightly damp.
  • Use different colors of coffee to paint your preferred design. Start with the paler areas, and leave it to dry between each tone for them to stay separated.
  • If you want to add a layer of texture, apply salt or dry coffee grounds, as these will alter the composition and create spots without coffee ink.
  • Leave it dry and exhibit your art!

Coffee painting is simple and effective as occupational therapy. You can try to do it with your preferred brew, although we highly encourage you to try to do it with our product. Why? Because here at That Coffee Roasters, we can give you amazing blends for you to try to paint with. We can assure you that you won’t be disappointed!

Coffee and art is an almost therapeutic mix.

From Venezuela with Love: Venezuelan Specialty Coffee

From Mérida to Trujillo!
"Un con leche, por fa," that's how you ask for a latte in Spanish!

In 1819, Colombia and Venezuela were one big country: Great Colombia. Sometime later, the land separated into the modern nations they are now, but their briefly shared history left them with forever intertwined agriculture. Some years later, both countries would delve in almost simultaneously into the coffee world. Many know the richness of Colombia’s coffee history, but not many know about its sister, Venezuela, and the incredible specialty coffee that comes off this land.

Venezuelan Specialty Coffee

South America proved to be a fertile land for almost anything. From a variety of veggies to some strong cacao flavors, this country has always been successfully working in the rural terrain, to make it fantastic for their economy. And one thing Venezuelans have all in common is their wish to stand out as far as flavors go. That’s why they have been working throughout the decades to create unique bean breeds that offer a new twist on the traditional flavors people know and love.

Over its vast territory and even in a less-than-ideal soil, Venezuelans have harvested coffee crops, in the hopes of making specialty coffee. And the hard work paid off in numbers: their coffee it’s one of the most easily recognizable profiles in the caffeine world. Although its commercialization numbers decreased in the past decades, this South American nation is still the birthplace of many flavorful beans that spice up shops selections across the world.

But what are the characteristics of Venezuelan coffee? These depend on the cultivated region, so we’re going to break them down for you:

Maracaibo’s coffee: balanced acidity with peppered but sweet flavors. Can be found in Zulia, and while the high temperature and less-than-fertile soil might look like a detriment for the taste, it’s one of the richest flavors in the country.

Mérida’s coffee: with a light taste, and a combination of delicate profile and sweetness, this coffee is indeed one of the best in the country. It’s cultivated in the perfect terrain too: Andes mountains, with perfect precipitation to make any crop blossom.

Táchira’s coffee: rich flavors, with balanced acidity and sweetness. It’s the most similar to Colombian’s crops, but this offers a deeper yet more delicate chemical play, flavor-wise.

Caracas’ coffee: the best coffee in the country, with their distinctive flavor and perfect crops to vouch for it. Rich, dense and almost creamy, it balances acidity and sweetness in the right measure.

What Can I Do with My Leftover Coffee?

Sometimes we make much more coffee than we intended. Or maybe things came up, and we left our brew unattended and left to get cold. This doesn’t mean coffee is gone to waste, reusing it is always the best alternative. Once you know what to do with your extra brewed coffee, a little too much coffee can become a delicious or useful blessing.

That Coffee Roasters suggests measuring your coffee with care before brewing it if you don’t want to have an extra and cold coffee. But in the case it happens, we offer you some alternatives for it. There’s no excuse for waste.

Some alternatives for making the most out of the leftover coffee
There are plenty of recipes that need coffee in their preparation, leftover coffee is a great way to use it for your desserts or even some meals. Let’s review some.

In past articles, we’ve explored some traditional recipes that call for coffee like tiramisu or coffee soaked ladyfingers layered with whipped custard and cocoa powder, but a dash of creativity can take you to new culinary levels.

Cooking with the leftover coffee: think about it, extra coffee is essentially coffee-flavored water. You can use leftover coffee in your steak marinade, for example. If you make a fruit compote, try using your brew instead of water for the perfect breakfast topping. If you really want to be efficient and have a 2-in-1 breakfast, you could even cook your morning oatmeal in coffee instead of regular water, you put your own limits!

The leftover coffee can also add an extra touch of acidity to most recipes. Experiment with vinaigrettes by changing the vinegar for coffee. Create your own caffeinated barbeque sauce or chili.

Using coffee as a water substitute for baking: similar to cooking, just change water for coffee in a baking recipe. This might work for a cake or brownie mix for a rich and delicious treat.

Coffee doesn’t go bad immediately, you can put your coffee in the fridge and save it for baking later. Just don’t let it sit longer than a couple days, you don’t want to bite into a cake and discover old coffee flavor.

Making coffee ice cubes and smoothies: iced coffee can get messy and watered down before you can drink it all. Coffee ice cubes can improve that. Just add your leftover coffee into an ice cube tray and let it freeze overnight. That way your iced coffee stays cold and undiluted for a longer time.

Now, take coffee ice cubes to the next level by making a coffee smoothie. Sounds great, huh? And it's so simple! You just have to blend coffee ice cubes, some fruit like bananas, and a cup of milk (or even yogurt) together to get a cool caffeinated drink. You can also change the bananas for cocoa powder, cinnamon, or vanilla for a flavor boost.

Remember: the key is to be creative, avoid waste and, above all, enjoy the results! Please let us know your opinions on the corresponding section and don’t forget to follow us at our That Coffee Roasters social networks!

10 DON'TS at a Coffee Shop

In the modern world, the cafes are no longer just small shops to buy something quick and follow the routine. Nowadays they are respectable, bohemian and, especially, pleasant establishments, which present the perfect opportunity to enjoy the free time we have; since whether to go meditate while drinking a latte, have a romantic date with a cup of java and a good companion, or simply to take the family for a coffee at the end of the week.

There is another type of clientele that abounds in cafes, these are freelancers or people who have a remote job, these people usually go to cafes to enjoy the inspiration and relaxation that these environments provide, as well as to taste some coffee or eat a snack while they work on their next project.

The cafes, as well as the roads, have a peak hour, which makes them more crowded at a certain time of the day, giving more work to the baristas and reducing the space of the premises.

Before all these situations and types of clientele, we decided to dedicate today's article to talk about some things we can avoid doing in a cafe, either work or go for leisure. It doesn’t matter if you are a busy freelancer or a regular client or someone who visits the premises for the first time, we can always do our part, so the experience of going to a cafe is as pleasant as possible.

10 don’ts that you can avoid next time you go to a coffee shop
Dear reader, the following is a list of things That Coffee Roasters has structured to ensure that the experience of enjoying a coffee in a local will be as pleasant as possible, as long as you put your part to avoid doing these things that we mention.

  1. Don’t bring food and drinks from another store. Especially if the food you bought is on the actual menu of the coffee shop you’re at, this shows cheapness, and it might offend the staff.
  2. Don’t flirt with the baristas (not too much, at least). Yes, baristas can be gorgeous, but, if you really want to flirt with them, then wait until they’re not busy. Avoid taking too much of their time while there’s a long line, if you do, you might embarrass yourself when the barista says “no.”
  3. Don’t be loud. There’s nothing more annoying when you would like to work or relax in a coffee shop, than another customer having a rather loud conversation on the phone. Keep your voice to yourself, or if you can, answer your call outside. Also, if you’re going to listen to music (which is valid), PLEASE use your headphones for it.
  4. Don’t hoard the seats. This is a tip for peak hours mostly. Just avoid using an extra chair for your backpack and another one for your grocery bags, things like that make the difference.
  5. Don’t use a whole table for yourself. You're one person, how much space can you really need? Don’t occupy a table for four with your laptop, briefcase, papers, etc. Leave some area for other customers. Save a chair if you’re waiting for someone.
  6. Don’t buy a single shot and then camp in the shop for three hours for the wi-fi. Simple. The rule of thumb is that you should order at least one coffee for every three hours you’ll be staying.
  7. Don’t mess around with the outlets. Avoid creating trip lines across the floor, also avoid at all costs unplugging store lamps to charge your devices. That messes with the atmosphere and can really be annoying to people who think long and hard about how their space should feel and appear.
  8. Don’t be cheap with the tips. If you’re a regular customer, make a point of tipping the staff in a fair fashion, even if you only order drip coffee. They’ll notice, and in turn, will be more likely treat you better with each visit.
  9. Don’t abuse the wifi. Have some bandwidth limits. Don’t download huge torrents or stream a whole Netflix movie over the coffee shop’s internet connection, because it may slow down access for the other customers who have the right to use it as much as you do.
  10. Don’t be afraid to talk to others. A coffee shop is a place for social interaction, use that space for meeting new people, be nice to them and who knows what might happen!
Remember, the key is to be kind, respectful and conscious. Please let us know your opinions on the corresponding section and don’t forget to follow us at our That Coffee Roasters social networks!

Coffee 101: Bulletproof Coffee

First things first.

Dear That Coffee Roasters: what is Bulletproof Coffee, and what’s all the fuzz about it?

Well, dear reader, let’s get a little bit technical. Bulletproof Coffee it’s a performance-enhancing beverage that provides a massive impact on energy and cognitive function. Bulletproof Coffee is for everyone who wants to increase their stamina, so they have a better attitude in their daily lives. The main ingredient? Butter.

Is Bulletproof Coffee Good for Your Health?
Fat-packed food and coffee are the two most controversial edible products in the Modern Western World. But recent evidence shows that coffee and certain fats are not only helpful for your neural and endocrine system in the short-term, but also in the long-term, helping to protect them against disease and inflammatory conditions.

Unique Properties of Bulletproof Coffee
This coffee doesn’t just taste good. It’s abundant in essential nutrients like B vitamins, potassium, and manganese. Bulletproof Coffee has loads of antioxidants, which will reduce all risk of chronic degenerative diseases (like Alzheimer's!) and keep your brain on point. Other health benefits of coffee are:

  • Suppresses your hunger: Brain Octane oil balances ghrelin and CCK, which are hormones that make you feel hungry, thus keeping you full for longer periods.
  • Steadies your stamina: the saturated fat in (grass-fed only) butter slows the assimilation of caffeine, which keeps you in a full-energy mode for several hours instead of a caffeine peak and downfall.
  • Mental clarity: Brain Octane rapidly transforms into ketones, a compound that your brain uses with more finesse than carbs or even sugar. Pair ketones with the slowly releasing caffeine and your brain capacity will be on the rise.

Benefits from Drinking Bulletproof coffee
  • More brain power: a group of chemicals called bioflavonoids (found in coffee) are capable of making you smarter by intensifying neuronal firing in the brain. This means your brain cells will communicate faster so thoughts come more quickly and you’ll have better recall. Coffee can also protect your brain as you age.
  • Attitude empowered: there’s some evidence that a couple cups of coffee a day can improve your mood and sense of alertness.
  • More stamina, less fat percentage: caffeine can improve your physical capabilities so your workouts will be more effective. The caffeine can also raise your metabolism to help you consume fat faster.
  • No jitters!: moldy coffee beans are associated with the infamous jitters. This is not the case with Bulletproof Coffee. These beans undergo a stringent quality control process, nullifying all mold toxins and pesticides that can decrease your energy and focus.

Go on and try this exciting new trend and let us know your opinion in the comment section; you might want to try them with the coffee grounds from That Coffee Roasters! Don’t forget to contact us to get the best-roasted coffee, made with exclusive blends, just to fit your needs.
