How Does Coffee Affect Our Mood During the Day?

Do you turn into a person only after drinking a cup of coffee? We explain you why!

The first time you drank coffee, you probably did it to find out what was all the fuss about it. Why do people love this bitter drink so much? You might not have noticed at first, but eventually, you realized that coffee was perfect to increase your energy during Monday mornings and it just made you feel so much better, even if you didn’t really know why.

Apart from water, coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world. Its positive effects are no secret, drinking a cup can improve our alertness and wake us up to have an overall better performance in our daily tasks. It’s no wonder then that caffeine had conquered the world in a way no other substances have entirely been able to.

But besides helping us shake away doziness, coffee also has a huge impact on our general mood during the day. Depending on how much coffee you consume every day, its effects can go from positive to negative. Caffeine can help you battle depression, but also it can increase the risk of suffering from anxiety disorders if you drink it too much. Stick with us to find out how our beloved lil’ cup affects our body chemistry and, therefore, our mood and emotions!

Adrenaline Goes Up!
Studies have found that caffeine starts working in our body 10 minutes right after consuming it. The first thing you’ll probably notice is that your heart rate will quicken and your blood pressure will rise. By this point, it’s hard to see any changes in our mood, but that’ll start to change after you hit the 20-minute mark.

As caffeine blocks your adenosine receptors to stop them from being able to receive the hormone, you will feel more aware and attentive, which means you’ll get better at making decisions and concentrating on small tasks. We’re basically saying that coffee will be artificially removing sleepiness' associated feelings or sensations from your brain.

But that’s not all there is to it: 30 minutes after the caffeine has entered your system, adrenaline will be released, and dopamine's levels will increase. If you’ve heard of dopamine before, you know that it’s widely known for producing a feeling of euphoria and happiness.

After 40 minutes, serotonin will join dopamine’s increasing levels, and your mood will lift! The combination of all these hormones will improve your motor neuron’s functionality and coordination, your body cells will be releasing energy faster, and you’ll be better at anything you do. How can you not be in a good mood if this is the case? You’ll be feeling caffeine’s powers in full effect!

Coffee will generally stay in your body for a total of 12 hours. After 6 hours, 50% of the caffeine will be gone thanks to its diuretic effect, and you will lose your little superpowers.

How Much Is Enough?
Even though we put it like this, we also have to warn you that caffeine can be addictive. Our bodies can start craving what makes them feel good but is not always the best. Caffeine increases our adrenaline's and norepinephrine's levels, which put our minds and bodies in a state of alert and emergency. This effect can make us feel stressed and anxious in otherwise normal situations, and cause us to feel irritability and agitation.

Don’t worry though. This generally does not happen unless you’re consuming way too much caffeine. If you start to feel these symptoms and begin to experience muscle tremors, then it’s definitely time to reduce the dose. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends consuming no more than 400 milligrams a day, which amounts to 4 or 5 cups of coffee.

That’s more than enough to get all benefits coffee can bring into your life and to enjoy from its bittersweet and contrasting flavor.
